Russia has been making incremental gains this year in the east and the loss comes as Ukraine\u2019s President Volodymyr Zelensky returns from a meeting with US President Joe Biden without his key demands met.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t00063b6ka9orhjat@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Vuhledar, a town built around a coal mine (its name comes from the Ukrainian word for coal), sits some 50km (30 miles) south of Pokrovsk, viewed for the past few months as Russia\u2019s main nexus of attack in the east.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t00073b6kfinvq0a0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While not a transport and logistics hub like Pokrovsk, Vuhledar was heavily fortified\u00a0and viewed as a crucial bastion at the intersection of Ukraine\u2019s eastern and southern fronts.\u00a0One prominent Russian war blogger Boris Rozhin said this made the victory \u201coperational, if not operational-strategic.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t00083b6koo624x7a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe fact is that this \u2018balcony\u2019 [an apparent reference to Vuhledar\u2019s elevated position] was located at the junction of the Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk fronts posed a constant threat to the grouping that covered the approaches to Mariupol,\u201d he noted, referring to the southern Ukrainian city that has been in Russian hands since 2022.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t00093b6kx9cni48l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just like Avdiivka, another strategic eastern town which fell in February, Vuhledar is a victim not of Russian strategic prowess but brute-force attrition.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000a3b6kztnp36k9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For two years Ukraine had put up a formidable defense there,\u00a0as Russia tried and failed several times to take the town.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000b3b6kg5jp3ikg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/02\/13\/europe\/russia-ukraine-vuhledar-donetsk-fiasco-intl\/index.html\">February 2023<\/a>, an attempted Russian assault on Vuhledar led to an uproar among pro-Kremlin military bloggers, as hundreds of Russian troops advanced right into the crosshairs of Ukrainian artillery, launched from the town\u2019s high-rise apartment blocks.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000c3b6k53myxalc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Another Russian blogger, Voenkor Kotenok, alluded to this bittersweet victory Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000d3b6kiofc23kw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s painful, Vuhledar or rather those who settled there, drank a lot of blood,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000e3b6kbzlb84ug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, it is Ukraine that will face the difficult questions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000f3b6kxon1q7kz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The fact that Russia was able to bring in sufficient reserves to encircle the town underscores the manpower advantage it still has, four months after Ukraine\u2019s\u00a0mobilisation law came into force.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000g3b6kzyb43iwt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI confidently said that one would have to be a moron to allow our guys to be surrounded, but someone did,\u201d wrote Stanislav Buniatov, a Ukrainian soldier and blogger, in a Telegram post.\u00a0He claimed soldiers ended up withdrawing from Vuhledar in small groups, taking fire from Russian drones, and that the wounded were left \u201cto be shot by the enemy.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000h3b6kd4g64sf0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The timing of this loss will also be keenly felt in Kyiv.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000i3b6kr2o707o9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It comes less than two months after Ukraine expanded the battlefield to Russia\u2019s Kursk region \u2013 a move designed to ease the pressure on other fronts and help reverse Ukrainian fortunes after Russia spent the spring and summer gradually advancing in the east and opening a new front in the northern Kharkiv region.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000j3b6ksr0gpgni@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s also just days since Zelensky returned from a politically-charged diplomatic blitz in the US with the promise of new aid, but no NATO-style security guarantees or permission to use Western missiles in Russia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000k3b6k0i0ah2hl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Just a\u00a0week ago Zelensky told US network ABC that \u201cwe are closer to peace than we think.\u201d The loss of Vuhledar means Ukraine now has to fight to stop Russia advancing further west,\u00a0making the prospect of retaking territory even more remote.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ruby0t000l3b6klzef5gxp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There has also been no let-up in Russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/19\/europe\/ukraine-energy-supply-winter\/index.html\">the International Energy Agency<\/a>\u00a0warning that \u201cthis winter will be, by far, its sternest
