He also blamed Martin for falsely suggesting that Nichols tried to grab Martin\u2019s weapon at the traffic stop.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf00093b5vdt4vjyy0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHe was affected by that to his detriment, and the detriment of Tyre Nichols,\u201d Leffler said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000a3b5vv5hn3b8q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An attorney for Bean, John Keith Perry, told jurors that Nichols ignored commands such as \u201cgive me your hands\u201d and said his client, the youngest of the officers, followed department policies. Perry said Bean did not know whether Nichols had a weapon but still ran after him and tackled him.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000b3b5v01kesdas@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe force was not excessive,\u201d Perry said. \u201cIt just wasn\u2019t.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000c3b5v640wjix7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bean only hit Nichols in his hands to try to get his hands and cuff him, Perry said, despite statements made by an FBI agent who testified Bean told him he punched Nichols in the head. They each called experts to try to combat prosecutors\u2019 arguments that the officers used excessive force against Nichols, didn\u2019t intervene, and failed to tell their supervisors and medical personnel about the extent of the beating.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000e3b5v6zk3n2z9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Both Martin and the other former officer who pleaded guilty and testified for prosecutors,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tyre-nichols-beating-death-memphis-trial-864b592141a429c5cbbed9964f3a2d72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Desmond Mills<\/a>, lied to investigators about what happened, said Perry, who warned the jury of playing a \u201cgame of changing words and semantics.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000f3b5v2qg4qxth@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tyre-nichols-beating-memphis-police-video-0daa689160c6902bd4ff76b407e06a59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Police video<\/a>\u00a0shows five officers, who are all Black, punched, kicked and hit Nichols, who was also Black, about a block from his home, as he called out for his mother.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000g3b5vqfw1gsoj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cYou saw the punches,\u201d Gilbert said. \u201cYou saw the kicks. You saw the baton strikes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000h3b5vuy674v0m@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Earlier Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Mark Norris read lengthy jury instructions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000i3b5v2c9lb2pc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Outside the courthouse, supporters of Nichols\u2019 family stood in a circle for a prayer from Tennessee state Rep. Justin Pearson while holding hands. They ended the prayer with a chant of \u201cJustice for Tyre.\u201d Pearson sat next to Nichols\u2019 mother, RowVaughn Wells, in court during the closing arguments, putting his hand on her back and rubbing gently to comfort her.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000j3b5vuvp1czo3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tyre-nichols-profile-memphis-3104f3cdbaf568daf6647eca080d4001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nichols<\/a>\u00a0died Jan. 10, 2023, three days after the beating. An autopsy report shows Nichols \u2014 the father of a boy who is now 7 \u2014 died from blows to the head. It was disbanded after Nichols\u2019 death.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1smbehf000m3b5v0l1yr8y3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Haley, Bean and Smith pleaded not guilty to federal charges of excessive force, failure to intervene, and obstructing justice through witness tampering.
