And everything went well.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>&#8220;Leadership from ULA and the Space Force assessed the readiness of the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29295-rocket-history.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/29295-rocket-history.html\">rocket<\/a>, payload and mission assets, discussed the status of pre-flight processing work, heard technical overviews of the countdown and flight, and previewed the weather forecast that projects a 75% chance of meeting the launch rules,&#8221; ULA <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ulalaunch.com\/missions\/next-launch\/vulcan-cert-2\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.ulalaunch.com\/missions\/next-launch\/vulcan-cert-2\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">wrote in an update today<\/a>. &#8221; At the conclusion of the meeting, senior leaders were polled and gave a ready status for launch, then signed the Launch Readiness Certificate.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"see-more see-more--clipped\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet hawk-ignore\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We are &#8220;go&#8221; for the launch of the #VulcanRocket on the #Cert2 flight test! On Tuesday (Oct. 1), the company conducted a crucial &#8220;wet dress rehearsal&#8221; with the rocket, fueling it up, going through a practice countdown and then offloading the propellant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We completed all of that,&#8221; ULA CEO Tory Bruno told reporters during a media call on Wednesday (Oct. 2). &#8220;It went very, very well, per plan.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ula-vulcan-centaur-first-launch-peregrine-celestis-moon-mission\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ula-vulcan-centaur-first-launch-peregrine-celestis-moon-mission\"><strong>ULA&#8217;s Vulcan rocket launches private US moon lander, 1st since Apollo, and human remains in debut flight<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div id=\"slice-container-newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-EjGxNVuxGsboeH6oEmc9Uj\" class=\"slice-container newsletter-inbodyContent-slice newsletterForm-articleInbodyContent-EjGxNVuxGsboeH6oEmc9Uj slice-container-newsletterForm\">\n<div data-hydrate=\"true\" class=\"newsletter-form__wrapper newsletter-form__wrapper--inbodyContent\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form__container\">\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__top-bar\"\/>\n<section class=\"newsletter-form__main-section\">\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Sign up to the newsletter for the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The Vulcan Centaur&#8217;s debut flight, Cert-1, lifted off in January, sending the privately built <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ula-vulcan-centaur-first-launch-peregrine-celestis-moon-mission\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ula-vulcan-centaur-first-launch-peregrine-celestis-moon-mission\">Peregrine moon lander to Earth orbit<\/a>.\u00a0The rocket performed extremely well, according to Bruno.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was the cleanest first launch I&#8217;ve ever had, and it is the cleanest first launch I&#8217;ve ever seen anybody else have,&#8221; he said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Peregrine was not similarly spotless, however. The lander <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astrobotic-peregrine-moon-lander-propulsion-failure\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astrobotic-peregrine-moon-lander-propulsion-failure\">suffered a propellant leak<\/a> shortly after separating from the rocket&#8217;s Centaur V upper stage and was eventually guided to a controlled destruction <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astrobotic-peregrine-moon-lander-mission-conclusion\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/astrobotic-peregrine-moon-lander-mission-conclusion\">in Earth&#8217;s atmosphere<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cert-2 was supposed to launch an operational payload as well \u2014\u00a0\u00a0Sierra Space&#8217;s robotic\u00a0<a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19552-dream-chaser.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/19552-dream-chaser.html\">Dream Chaser<\/a>\u00a0space plane. But Dream Chaser <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ula-dream-chaser-launch-vulcan-centaur-postpone-national-security\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/ula-dream-chaser-launch-vulcan-centaur-postpone-national-security\">wasn&#8217;t ready in time<\/a> for Cert-2&#8217;s liftoff, so the mission will fly an inert &#8220;mass simulator,&#8221; along with some extra instrumentation that will allow ULA to assess Vulcan Centaur&#8217;s performance in great detail.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no paying customer; this is all on us,&#8221; Bruno said of Cert-2. &#8220;Which is also why we wanted to get some experiments on there and get as much utility out of it as we could.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bruno declined to give an exact price tag for Cert-2 but did say it&#8217;s in the &#8220;high tens of millions of dollars.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If all goes well with Cert-2 and the ensuing data reviews, Vulcan Centaur will begin flying national security missions soon: ULA plans to launch two Space Force missions, called USSF-106 and USSF-87, with the rocket by the end of the year, Bruno said.<\/p>\n<p>The company aims to launch 20 missions in 2025, he added, half of them with the Vulcan Centaur and half with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40250-atlas-v-rocket.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/40250-atlas-v-rocket.html\">Atlas V<\/a>,\u00a0the workhorse rocket that the Vulcan Centaur is designed to replace.
