These proteins can go bad by clumping together to form long, twisting fibrils that disrupt cell function.<\/p>\n<p>Abnormal clumps of tau are called neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) \u2014 they are a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/10\/lifestyle\/alzheimers-app-could-be-key-for-newly-diagnosed-patients\/\">hallmark of Alzheimer\u2019s<\/a>, a neurodegenerative condition that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/21\/lifestyle\/where-you-live-can-affect-chances-of-a-dementia-diagnosis-study\/\">affects an estimated 7 million Americans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Now, an international team led by Lancaster University in the UK says it has developed a drug called RI-AG03 that targets and blocks the two \u201chotspots\u201d where tau clumping tends to occur.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Scientists used a special imaging technique to observe how tau protein clumps in the brain tissue of genetically modified flies in response to treatment with RI-AG03. <span class=\"credit\">University of Southampton<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThere are two regions of the tau protein that act like a zipper to enable it to aggregate,\u201d explained Amritpal Mudher, professor of neuroscience at the University of Southampton. \u201cFor the first time, we have a drug which is effective in inhibiting both these regions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>University of Southampton researchers gave the drug to fruit flies that had toxic tau, noting that it suppressed neurodegeneration and extended the flies\u2019 lives by about two weeks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orkincanada.ca\/pests\/flies\/fruit-flies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The average fruit fly lifespan<\/a> is 40 to 50 days.<\/p>\n<p>Researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center also tested the drug in genetically engineered cells, finding that it reduced tau aggregation.<\/p>\n<p>The results were published Thursday in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dx.doi.org\/10.1002\/alz.14246\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alzheimer\u2019s &amp; Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer\u2019s Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"single__inline-module inline-module inline-module--newsletter aligncenter aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-newsletter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__title-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__unsubmitted-title-wrapper\">\n<h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tGet the latest breakthroughs in medicine, diet &amp; nutrition tips and more.\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\tSubscribe to our weekly Post Care newsletter!\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><h3 class=\"inline-module__title headline headline--combo-sm-md\">\n\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\t\t\t\t<\/h3>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Anthony Aggidis, former postdoctoral research associate at Lancaster University and visiting researcher at the University of Southampton, led the research. <span class=\"credit\">Lancaster University<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The team plans to test RI-AG03 in rodents before launching clinical trials.
