An X flare is the most intense, and the number represents its strength. While the Sun frequently produces these bursts of energy, flares of this magnitude are uncommon.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/7-fun-facts-about-the-northern-lights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>7 THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE NORTHERN LIGHTS<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The X9.0 flare takes the crown from the previous strongest flare of Solar Cycle 25, which was an X8.7 flare on May 14. Since May, the Sun has created its top three strongest flares of the cycle, with two of those happening this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\"><strong>GPS, HF radio signals can be impacted during solar storms<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The immediate impacts of the flare include strong degradation or signal loss for high-frequency communication bands over much of the sunlit side of Earth. According to the SWPC, high-frequency radio signals may experience loss of contact or major disruptions for minutes up to a couple of hours.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">During solar radiation storms of this magnitude, GPS navigation errors are likely, which could impact equipment that relies on GPS, such as tractors, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/extreme-solar-storms-disrupted-us-crop-planting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as farmers experienced during May\u2019s extreme solar storms.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 data-v-4e81e892=\"\"><strong>What is the Northern <\/strong>L<strong>ights forecast for the US?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">Before this latest eruption from the Sun, the SWPC had issued a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/learn\/what-is-a-geomagnetic-storm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Geomagnetic Storm Watch<\/a> from Thursday through Saturday after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/second-strongest-solar-flare-northern-lights-us\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an X7.1, the third-strongest of the solar cycle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">The SWPC rates solar storms on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/these-are-the-5-categories-that-measure-geomagnetic-storms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>five-level scale<\/u><\/a>, with five being the most extreme and rarest\u00a0<a><u>space weather<\/u><\/a>\u00a0conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">According to the SWPC, coronal mass ejection impacts from the X7.1 flare are forecast to begin arriving beginning Thursday. A period of G3 &#8220;strong&#8221; geomagnetic storming conditions is possible on Friday. These conditions could produce Aurora Borealis or Northern lights as far south as Iowa and across the Midwest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/earth-space\/the-day-the-northern-lights-covered-the-planet-history-earths-greatest-solar-storms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><u>THE DAY THE NORTHERN LIGHTS COVERED THE PLANET: HISTORY OF EARTH&#8217;S GREATEST SOLAR STORMS<\/u><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-v-438398f6=\"\">These stronger geomagnetic storms are less common than G1 or G2 events.
