After several exchanges about a possible interview, the publisher sent an unusual demand last week: an interview would cost $250,000.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg00073b6mnt8syzqo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In an email to CNN, Skyhorse Publishing sent a document labeled, \u201cConfidentiality and Nondisclosure Agreement\u201d that laid out strict terms for an interview and\u00a0use of material from the book, titled \u201cMelania,\u201d due to publish on October 8. On top of that, the agreement stipulated that \u201cCNN shall pay a licensing fee of two hundred fifty thousand dollars ($250,000).\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg00083b6mfx8hvsp0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            CNN did not sign the agreement.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg00093b6mwvkzg2ce@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Days later, after a separate CNN journalist asked Skyhorse Publishing about the exorbitant interview fee,\u00a0the publisher said\u00a0it\u00a0had sent the\u00a0payment demand\u00a0by mistake.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000a3b6mm1bo4zse@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNeither Melania nor anyone from her team knew anything about the NDA and the document that was sent reflected an internal miscommunication,\u201d Tony Lyons, the president and publisher of Skyhorse, told CNN in a statement. \u201cHad CNN signed an NDA, in the normal course of business, we would have approached Melania\u2019s team to discuss [specifics of the interview],\u201d Lyons said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000b3b6ms822494s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Paying a public figure for an interview, especially the spouse of a political candidate,\u00a0is highly frowned upon in\u00a0most newsrooms, which tend to have strict guidelines against such a practice. It is also highly unusual for the request to come from a representative purportedly acting on behalf of the spouse of a presidential candidate and a former first lady -\u2013 especially with such a large price tag.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000c3b6mqojllh10@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Melania Trump\u2019s spokesperson declined comment. A spokesperson for CNN also declined to comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000d3b6mw6ypxc6r@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even if the request was a miscommunication, the asking price in the NDA reflects\u00a0a\u00a0similar amount she has been compensated for in the past.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000e3b6minjt7otx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last\u00a0month, CNN\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/23\/politics\/melania-trump-speaking-engagements\/index.html\">revealed<\/a>\u00a0that the former first lady spoke at two political fundraisers for the Log Cabin Republicans this year, and she was paid $237,500 for an April event, according to former\u00a0President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/president-donald-trump-45\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/15\/politics\/read-donald-trump-financial-disclosure-forms\/index.html\">latest financial disclosure form<\/a>. The payment was listed as a \u201cspeaking engagement.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8mbr7001e3b6m8wkv3xcj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Records show Melania Trump was also paid $250,000 for a Log Cabin Republican event in December 2022, one of three payments for $250,000 or more that she received for speaking that month, just after the former president announced he was running for reelection, according to Donald Trump\u2019s prior year financial disclosure form.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000g3b6myu438ket@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The \u201cConfidential Material\u201d in the contract is described as \u201cthe unpublished manuscript of the Work, notes, letters, photos, or verbal information of any kind and any information obtained from any third party that Publisher or Author treats as proprietary and designates as Confidential Material.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000h3b6m0yp1db25@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Any CNN employee who would work on the interview would need to sign the NDA, the contract states, and each breach of the NDA would entitle Trump and\/or her publisher \u201cliquidated damages\u201d of $100,000, according to the document.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000i3b6mdu8v4r44@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The NDA has signature lines for CNN, Lyons, president of Skyhorse Publishing, which is distributed by Simon &amp; Schuster, and the\u00a0former first lady\u2019s\u00a0agent Marc Beckman.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tc6zaa00023b6mzc8x04pl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It is specifically noted in the contract that\u00a0the payment\u00a0would be for an interview with a media company &#8211; CNN \u2013 as well as for licensing photos and excerpts from the book. Even if the contract was sent as\u00a0an\u00a0\u201cinternal miscommunication\u201d it\u2019s an unusual request from the publisher\u00a0of such a\u00a0high-profile\u00a0individual.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1td1fh600073b6muhtxpg49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s totally unprecedented. No former first lady has ever done that,\u201d said Kate Anderson Brower, author of \u201cFirst Women: The Grace and Power of America\u2019s Modern First Ladies.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1td1d7f00053b6mux7z96ur@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Anita McBride, director of The Legacies of America\u2019s First Ladies Initiative at American University\u00a0and a former special assistant in the George W. Bush White House, said that while first ladies have received handsome fees for writing books, such a payment for a news interview is unusual.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1td4rto000e3b6m44v0owli@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt is a consistent practice with Mrs. Trump to make the choices that work for her and to be unburdened by any past practice by anyone else. She is her own enterprise when it comes to everything in her life,\u201d McBride said. \u201cThat\u2019s the premise of her book. I\u2019ve made my choices and not constricted by anyone else before her.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000j3b6mj9q8c5vk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ahead of her memoir\u2019s release,\u00a0Trump has thus far only been interviewed\u00a0by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/melania-trump-opens-relationship-husband-prepared-become-first-lady\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News<\/a>, which touted last month\u2019s\u00a0sit-down with Ainsley Earhardt\u00a0as an exclusive, the first with the former first lady in two years. The interview included what\u00a0appeared\u00a0to be old family and personal photographs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tiv441000n3b6m22uj70z0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump was also interviewed by Fox\u2019s Sean Hannity Wednesday evening and has an interview with Maria Bartiromo airing Sunday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000k3b6mllb2ba18@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe did not pay any fee whatsoever for the interviews, including licensing fees for photos,\u201d a spokesperson for Fox News told CNN.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000l3b6m2uvslf13@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Spokespeople for ABC, NBC and CBS declined to comment on whether they received a similar request for payment from Trump\u2019s publisher.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tb9t6e00003b6mzaws89t6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Thursday, the former first lady <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MELANIATRUMP\/status\/1841806743216537870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted<\/a> a short video on X saying \u201cthere is no room for compromise\u201d when it comes to a woman\u2019s \u201cindividual freedom.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/03\/politics\/abortion-melania-trump\/index.html\">The post<\/a> came after The Guardian reported excerpts from Trump\u2019s forthcoming book in which she says she supports abortion rights \u201cfree from any intervention or pressure from the government.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000t3b6m77nihac5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While it\u2019s not unheard of for\u00a0news organizations\u00a0to pay for exclusive rights for materials or interviews \u2013 especially connected to scandals \u2013 it is viewed by the industry as crossing ethical boundaries and is not standard practice.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000u3b6mjsq2ho6k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Payment \u201cincentivizes the subject to alter what they\u2019re saying to make it more valuable to the organization, to exaggerate or sensationalize,\u201d said Kelly McBride, Senior Vice President and Chair of the Craig Newmark Center for Ethics and Leadership at The Poynter Institute (no relation to Anita McBride). \u201cYour goal when you interview people is to bring their perspective in so you can get closer to the truth, and if they have some sort of incentive to distort that you are failing your audience.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000v3b6m0rn9vsec@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            McBride said\u00a0news organizations will\u00a0often\u00a0get around paying for an interview by instead paying to license material like photos or videos.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000w3b6mhdzr59jw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2008, ABC News paid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/07\/us\/casey-anthony-documentary-cec\/index.html\">Casey Anthony\u00a0<\/a>$200,000 for the exclusive use of family photographs and videos of her daughter, whose body was later discovered. The payments were not\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2010\/03\/19\/124913007\/abc-news-under-fire-for-payment-to-murder-suspect\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disclosed<\/a>\u00a0until a court filing related to Anthony\u2019s case in 2010.\u00a0 (A source at ABC News told CNN on Wednesday the network does not pay for interviews).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000x3b6men3y195y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            NBC once\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/06\/13\/business\/media\/13payments.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placed money<\/a>\u00a0in a trust fund for a\u00a0Washington state\u00a0high school student who faked a pregnancy\u00a0as a senior project in exchange\u00a0for video of the student revealing the ruse to her classmates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000y3b6me5vibasz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But any payment or donation from reporters or news organizations related to politics is considered the ultimate anathema, because of conflicts of interest.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg000z3b6mrshnrh2p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In 2015, ABC anchor George Stephanopoulos apologized for failing to disclose $75,000 in donations to the Clinton Foundation, later recusing himself from ABC\u2019s planned 2016 Republican presidential primary debate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg00103b6mtcax4mgc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even though Melania Trump is not running for her office, political spouses are often viewed as a package deal with their candidate partners, said McBride of the Poynter Institute.\u00a0But in this case, the Trump campaign hasn\u2019t been involved in Melania Trump\u2019s book rollout.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1t8jzbg00113b6mn8x8gbsq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Married couples are usually considered a single economic entity, with shared bank accounts and property, McBride noted. In a divorce, assets are usually considered shared even if both parties are not listed on the accounts.
