I see so many people struggle with this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She notes that some foods that may tick the boxes for nutrition can cause weight gain, \u201cwhich is not healthy for your overall body, especially if you have weight to lose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Muhlstein shares her list of six \u201chealthy\u201d items to cut out or cut back on if you\u2019re trying to lose weight \u2014 granola, nut butters, sourdough bread, avocado, pesto and chia seed pudding.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Granola <\/h2>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Granola is considered the caloric equivalent of a \u201ccrushed-up cookie.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">senteliaolga \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Muhlstein calls out granola as the caloric equivalent of a \u201ccrushed-up cookie,\u201d reporting that a single cup of the crunchy stuff can contain up to 600 calories. <\/p>\n<p>She explains that while the oats in granola may seem like a healthy choice, they\u2019re \u201cusually being tossed with nut butter, oils, maple syrup, honey, thrown-in chocolate chips and coconut shavings.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>To wit, a nutrient profiling system from Tufts University once ranked ice cream as <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/08\/16\/ice-cream-is-better-than-granola-surprising-snack-study\/\">healthier than granola<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekeystonutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Courtney Smith<\/a>, a registered dietitian, diabetes specialist and founder of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekeystonutrition.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Keys to Nutrition<\/a>, previously told <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/01\/lifestyle\/dietitian-reveals-4-sneaky-health-halo-foods-to-avoid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Post<\/a> that granola is a \u201chealth halo,\u201d meaning it is marketed as healthy but may do more harm than good. <\/p>\n<p>She maintains, \u201cGranola may seem like a healthy cereal option, but it contains a great deal of added sugar, which is used to form the clumps.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith recommends eating calorically dense granola as a topping rather than by the bowlful.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nut butters <\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nut butters are a no-go for weight loss. <span class=\"credit\">Nelli Kovalchuk \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>While whole nuts contain protein, Muhlstein maintains that nut butter is \u201cnot a protein source.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She advises dieters to add these butters to dressings, smoothies and stir-fries to boost flavor and deliver a dose of healthy fats but stop short of making them a main meal, \u201cIf you are trying to eat peanut butter for protein and you\u2019re having a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, you are having a lot of calories, a lot of carbs \u2026 and very, very little protein overall.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Peanut butter has historically been a bit polarizing. Some experts say it contains healthy fats that can support weight loss, while others claim<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"> the spread\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/10\/26\/my-peanut-butter-addiction-made-me-fat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unwittingly contributes to weight gain.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re dedicated to dipping, Smith tells The Post that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/01\/lifestyle\/dietitian-reveals-4-sneaky-health-halo-foods-to-avoid\/\">full-fat versions of nut butters are better for the body than diet or reduced-fat options<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sourdough bread<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sourdough is a definite don\u2019t. <span class=\"credit\">John \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sourdough bread, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/03\/26\/baking-bread-is-keeping-people-sane-during-coronavirus-lockdown\/\">the carbohydrate star<\/a>\u00a0of COVID lockdowns, has lost some of its luster post-pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Muhlstein notes that while sourdough is fermented and has a lower glycemic index than other breads, it \u201cstill has calories\u201d and is \u201cstill not cauliflower.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>She points to clients who bake a homemade loaf each week and eat every slice, \u201cIt\u2019s really not working for their weight loss. But it\u2019s the last thing they think is the problem because it\u2019s been touted as such\u00a0a healthy food.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avocado <\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Eaten in excess, avocados can sabotage weight loss plans.  <span class=\"credit\">sola_sola \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Avocados are a bonafide superfood. Chock full of healthy fats and fiber, an avo a day has been <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/20\/lifestyle\/eating-this-one-fruit-every-day-leads-to-better-sleep-heart-health-new-research\/\">linked to better sleep and improved cardiovascular function<\/a>. However, Muhlstein says eating the good green stuff in excess can lead to weight gain. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost women\u00a0only need about one avocado\u2019s worth of fat a day,\u201d Muhlstein told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n<p>She stresses that moderation is key when it comes to consumption, \u201cI usually recommend about a quarter to a third of an avocado at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pesto<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ingredients like olive oil, parmesan cheese and pine nuts make pesto a high-fat, high-calorie condiment.  <span class=\"credit\">smirart \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>According to Muhlstein, there\u2019s a reason zookeepers recently <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/25\/lifestyle\/meet-pesto-the-49-pound-baby-penguin-going-viral-online\/\">named an overweight baby penguin Pesto<\/a>.
