{"id":110161,"date":"2024-10-04T04:36:02","date_gmt":"2024-10-03T21:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=110161"},"modified":"2024-10-04T04:36:02","modified_gmt":"2024-10-03T21:36:02","slug":"long-extinct-woolly-mammoth-will-be-brought-back-within-just-4-years-entrepreneur-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=110161","title":{"rendered":"Long-extinct woolly mammoth will be brought back \u2014 within just 4 years, entrepreneur claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>This could get hairy. <\/p>\n<p>A high-tech company is confident that extinct beasts as far back as the ice age \u2014 like the woolly mammoth \u2014 can be resurrected by 2028, all thanks to a bankroll by Hollywood A-listers like Paris Hilton and Chris Hemsworth.<\/p>\n<p>Start-up Colossal Biosciences, which bills itself as \u201cthe world\u2019s first de-extinction company,\u201d  is developing a way to revive \u201ccore\u201d genes <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/06\/us-news\/breakthrough-reached-that-could-lead-to-revival-of-woolly-mammoth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">from longtime extinct animals<\/a> including the mammoth, the dodo and the Tasmanian tiger, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/science\/dodo-mammoth-colossal-biosciences-extinction-b2622525.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Independent reported<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Colossal Biosciences is developing a way to revive \u201ccore\u201d genes from longtime extinct animals including the woolly mammoth. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Colossal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Texas-based business has raised upward of $235 million from its celebrity backers like motivational speaker Tony Robbins and PayPal co-founder and venture capitalist Peter Thiel \u2014 plus, in a wild twist,<a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2022\/09\/28\/cia-extinction-woolly-mammoth-dna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)<\/a>, according to The Intercept. <\/p>\n<p>Its CEO, Ben Lamm, likened the process to a \u201creverse Jurassic Park\u201d in an interview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/sciencetech\/article-13920229\/plan-bring-woolly-mammoth-2028.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">with the Daily Mail<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWe have set a date of late 2028 for our first mammoth and we are on track for that currently, which is great,\u201d Lamm told the Independent, noting that reviving the prehistoric giant requires a 22-month gestation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Company CEO Ben Lamm (above) likened the process to a \u201creverse Jurassic Park\u201d in a recent interview. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Colossal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Paris Hilton is among those bankrolling a startup looking to revive the woolly mammoth and other extinct animals. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images for MTV<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Chris Hemsworth is a financial supporter of the startup Colossal. <span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cBut given the other species have much shorter gestation, it is highly likely that we will see another species before the mammoth.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>To that end, the Tasmanian tiger, which went extinct in the early 1980s, would take \u201cjust weeks\u201d to revive, and the dodo bird, last seen in the 1600s, would require about one month, according to the bio boss.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI do believe that it is highly likely we will have a species before 2028, and it will be one of the three that you\u2019re looking at,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Although the mammoth went extinct roughly 4,000 years ago, the big beast \u2014 weighing 6 tons \u2014 shares 99.5% of its genes with the Asian elephant. Gene editing and stem cells would be fused with an Asian elephant egg from a healthy female of the species.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re not taking mammoth DNA and plugging in the holes,\u201d Lamm told the Daily Mail, alluding to the disastrous process depicted in Michael Crichton\u2019s 1990 sci-fi novel \u201cJurassic Park\u201d and the subsequent film franchise. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to engineer the lost genes from mammoths into Asian elephants.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The company specifies that the resurrection would be \u201cmore specifically a cold-resistant elephant with all of the core biological traits of the woolly mammoth,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/colossal.com\/mammoth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to a statement on its site<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will walk like a woolly mammoth, look like one, sound like one, but most importantly it will be able to inhabit the same ecosystem previously abandoned by the mammoth\u2019s extinction.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Colossal Biosciences is hoping to bring back the long-extinct woolly mammoth by 2028. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Colossal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Plus, if the creature were to return to arctic environments, the species could be an asset for the environment, the company claimed. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt could help in reversing the rapid warming of the climate and more pressingly, protect the arctic\u2019s permafrost,\u201d according to Colossal, which stressed that the ground layer is \u201cone of the world\u2019s largest carbon reservoirs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBringing back the woolly mammoth means bringing back a better Earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, as Colossal<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/31\/bio-engineering-firm-touts-plan-to-de-extinct-dodo-bird\/\"> touts the potential to bring back the dodo<\/a> and other long-gone animals, academics have called the idea theater. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cIt will walk like a woolly mammoth, look like one, sound like one, but most importantly it will be able to inhabit the same ecosystem previously abandoned by the mammoth\u2019s extinction,\u201d according to the company, whose CEO, Ben Lamm, is shown above. <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Colossal<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cDe-extinction is a fairytale science,\u201d Jeremy Austin, director of the Australian Center for Ancient DNA,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/national\/furry-tail-or-fairytale-thylacine-de-extinction-bid-wins-10m-boost-but-critics-question-science-20220815-p5b9u7.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u00a0told\u00a0the Sydney Morning Herald in 2022<\/a>. \u201cMammoth de-extinction is more about media attention for the scientists and less about doing serious science.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Lamm won\u2019t let his dreams die out over skepticism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCritics who say de-extinction of genes to create proxy species is impossible are critics who are simply not fully informed and do not know the science,\u201d he told The Intercept at the time. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have been clear from day one that on the path to de-extinction we will be developing technologies which we hope to be beneficial to both human healthcare as well as conservation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Colossal Biosciences <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20241001245642\/en\/Colossal-Launches-The-Colossal-Foundation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced it has formed<\/a> a nonprofit foundation to focus on \u201cconservation initiatives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The initiative would use the company\u2019s technologies to \u201crevolutionize wildlife conservation and ecosystem restoration, quickly,\u201d according to a statement. <\/p>\n<p>Partnerships with outside organizations \u201cwill focus on species that can benefit from genetic rescue, biobanking, and the creation and use of reference genomes.
