Similar to Ebola, Marburg virus disease is a rare but very severe illness that can be fatal in up to 88% of people who become sick. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Rwanda has confirmed 36 cases as of Oct. 2, including at least 19 in healthcare workers, most of whom work in intensive care units.<\/p>\n<p>Several cases are of unknown origin, suggesting additional cases may not have been detected or reported, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.cdc.gov\/han\/2024\/han00517.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a health alert<\/a> issued Oct. 3 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>This is the first time the disease has been reported in Rwanda.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWHO assesses the risk of this outbreak as very high at the national level, high at the regional level, and low at the global level,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/disease-outbreak-news\/item\/2024-DON537\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the World Health Organization said on Sept. 30<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is everything you need to know about Marburg virus disease as the outbreak continues in Rwanda.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Marburg virus disease?<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Egyptian rousette bats can spread Marburg virus to people and animals. <span class=\"credit\">The Washington Post via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Marburg virus disease, also known as Marburg hemorrhagic fever, is most often found in sub-Saharan Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The disease, initially detected in 1967 after outbreaks in Germany and Serbia, is caused by the Marburg or Ravn virus, which are classified as orthomarburgviruses.<\/p>\n<p>Orthomarburgviruses are naturally found in the Egyptian rousette bat. The cave-dwelling fruit bats, which make their home throughout Africa and the Middle East, can spread the disease to people and animals via their excretions.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms, which include fever, rash, and severe bleeding, can appear abruptly and rapidly worsen. There is no treatment for Marburg, and infection often leads to serious illness or death. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How it spreads<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>This is a colorized scanning electron micrograph of Marburg virus particles. <span class=\"credit\">BSIP\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Animals can contract Marburg by eating fruit that bats have been feeding on or by being bitten by an infected bat.<\/p>\n<p>Humans can become sick from contact with infected animals or needles, objects or surfaces contaminated with the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Marburg is spread\u00a0through<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>contact<strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong>with bodily fluids \u2014 blood, urine, saliva, sweat, feces, vomit, breast milk, amniotic fluid or semen \u2014 of someone infected with the virus via broken skin or mucous membranes in the eyes, nose or mouth.<\/p>\n<p>Marburg is\u00a0not<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>an airborne disease.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Symptoms<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A virologist works at the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, which researches Lassa fever, Marburg virus, Ebola and leishmaniasis. <span class=\"credit\">picture alliance via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Marburg patients typically begin experiencing symptoms two to 21 days after exposure.
