Argentina has long claimed sovereignty over the islands.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Argentina invaded in 1982 in a bid to reclaim sovereignty and said it had inherited the Falkland Islands from Spain in the 1800s.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">A brief but bitter war lasting 74 days followed &#8211; with 655 Argentinian, 255 British and three Falkland deaths &#8211; before British forces regained control on 14 June 1982.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Gov Blake&#8217;s announcement came after a deal which, after years of negotiations, saw the UK hand over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">This includes the tropical atoll of Diego Garcia, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/ckdg7jjlx2go\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">used by the US government as a highly-secretive military base for its warships and long-range bombers<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The treaty will also &#8220;address wrongs of the past and demonstrate the commitment of both parties to support the welfare of Chagossians&#8221;, according to a joint statement from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/clyv49klw25o\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The governor of the Falkland Islands has sought to calm concerns over the territory\u2019s sovereignty, following the UK\u2019s deal to hand over the Chagos Islands.
