The morning after, however, she received a piece of shocking news from a nurse on the maternity ward \u2014\u00a0she\u2019d tested positive for opiates. <\/p>\n<p>Having avoided any narcotic pain relief during labor, the exhausted mama was utterly confused, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.motherjones.com\/criminal-justice\/2024\/09\/drug-test-pregnancy-pennsylvania-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told Mother Jones<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re sure it was mine?\u201d she questioned the nurse, insisting she\u2019d never taken an illicit drug in her life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>At first, Horton speculated that her urine sample might have been mixed up with someone else\u2019s.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Then she remembered that her last meal had contained poppy seeds \u2014\u00a0known to naturally contain trace amounts of opiate residue, even after they\u2019re processed.<\/p>\n<p>Positive outcomes after consuming the culinary accoutrement are common enough that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gov\/News\/News-Stories\/Article\/Article\/3306336\/service-members-should-avoid-foods-with-poppy-seeds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">US Department of Defense has warned soldiers<\/a> not to eat poppy seeds \u2014\u00a0noting that they could affect test results.<\/p>\n<p>Urine drug screens have also been found to be easily misinterpreted, with false positive rates as high as 50 percent, according to multiple studies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But staffers at the Kaiser Permanente hospital in Santa Rosa, Calif., were determined to escalate the situation, the outlet reported.<\/p>\n<p>Nurses reported the unsubstantiated finding to child welfare, and a social worker soon arrived to take the baby girl into protective custody.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Horton ate a pre-made salad from Costco sprinkled with poppy seeds before giving birth, which she believes caused her drug test to come back positive for coedine.  <span class=\"credit\">David Tucker\/News-Journal \/ USA TODAY NETWORK<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey had a singular piece of evidence that I had taken something,\u201d an agonized Horton recounted. \u201cAnd it was wrong.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMom and dad insistent that a Costco salad with poppyseed dressing is responsible,\u201d a doctor wrote in her notes. Another doctor wrote: \u201cWe are unable to verify whether this could result in a positive test.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>After a second test came back positive for this opiate, the situation escalated. \u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cThey had a singular piece of evidence that I had taken something,\u201d she said, \u201cand it was wrong.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> <span class=\"credit\">facebook\/susan.williams.1004837<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>California law, unlike many other states, requires more than just a positive drug test to officially accuse a parent of child abuse. <\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, Horton had missed several prenatal appointments \u2014\u00a0due to worries over COVID-19 as well as a medical situation with one of her other children, the perturbed parent explained. <\/p>\n<p>Because skipped checkups are considered by providers as a red flag for drug abuse, a hospital social worker decided to move forward with her case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\">\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI just always have that looming feeling that at any moment Child Protective Services could come knocking and take my children away.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><cite>Susan Horton<\/cite><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Horton and her husband pleaded with doctors and insisted that keeping her baby in the hospital was unnecessary. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not a drug addict,\u201d she said she pleaded. Her husband called the police in an effort to stop the hospital, records inspected by Mother Jones show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Things went further sideways, however, when the enraged parents refused to allow investigators to inspect their home, or interview their family and friends. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>So, little Halle\u2019s caseworker secured a court order and placed the  precious bundle with her grandparents \u2014\u00a0expressly forbidding the parents from spending time alone with their new daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Horton arrived in court several days later when the caseworker claimed that Horton\u2019s alleged drug use posed a danger to her child. <\/p>\n<p>In an effort to regain custody, Horton agreed to another drug test, which was monitored by a worker, and to finally have her home inspected. <\/p>\n<p>After nearly two weeks, the child welfare agency, apparently now satisfied, decided to withdraw its petition.
