You\u2019re as defiant as any defendant this court has ever seen,\u201d Barrett told her in handing down the sentence. \u201cYou are no hero. You abused your position and you\u2019re a charlatan.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc2100083b6mwq4bukyr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jurors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/12\/politics\/tina-peters-colorado-clerk-convicted-computer-breach\/index.html\">found Peters guilty in August<\/a> for allowing a man to misuse a security card to access to the Mesa County election system and for being deceptive about that person\u2019s identity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc2100093b6m3y6790h0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The man was affiliated with MyPillow chief executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/02\/21\/politics\/mike-lindell-lawsuit-payment\/index.html\">Mike Lindell<\/a>, a prominent promoter of false claims that voting machines were manipulated to steal the election from former President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/politics\/president-donald-trump-45\">Donald Trump<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000a3b6m48l7v83v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At trial, prosecutors said Peters, a Republican, was seeking fame and became \u201cfixated\u201d on voting problems after becoming involved with those who had questioned the accuracy of the presidential election results.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000b3b6mrxey6uls@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A onetime hero to election deniers, Peters has been unapologetic about what happened.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000c3b6mx5ezkmyn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before being sentenced, Peters insisted that everything she did to try to root out what she believed was fraud was for the greater good.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000d3b6mfxyieh8b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve never done anything with malice to break the law. I\u2019ve only wanted to serve the people of Mesa County,\u201d she told the court.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000e3b6mrvedm610@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When Peters tried to press on with claims no legal authority has corroborated about \u201cwireless devices\u201d and software that changed ballot images in voting machines, she drew the exasperation of the judge, who pointed out that ballot recounts showed no discrepancies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000f3b6m0712ri1k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve let you go on enough about this,\u201d Barrett said. \u201cThe votes are the votes.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000g3b6mexpk772z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Later, the judge pointed out how Peters has kept up public appearances in broadcasts to sympathetic audiences for her own benefit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000h3b6m3golr5j9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s just more lies. No objective person believes them. No, at the end of the day, you cared about the jets, the podcasts and people flying with you,\u201d Barrett said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000i3b6mnmgnc8y6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Peters had the right to be defiant, he noted, but it was \u201ccertainly not helpful for her lot today.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000j3b6m55cmcdwb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The breach led by Peters heightened concerns that rogue election workers sympathetic to partisan lies could use their access and knowledge to attack voting processes from within.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000k3b6m86ti0ja3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Peters was convicted of three counts of attempting to influence a public servant, one count of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation, first-degree official misconduct, violation of duty and failing to comply with the secretary of state.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000l3b6mmo7cgq8x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            She was found not guilty of identity theft, one count of conspiracy to commit criminal impersonation and one count of criminal impersonation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000m3b6mkpzsvdtz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In a post on X after her conviction, Peters accused Colorado-based Dominion Voting Systems, which made her county\u2019s election system, as well as lawyers for state election officials of stealing votes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tobc21000n3b6mfg62f95j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI will continue to fight until the Truth is revealed that was not allowed to be brought during this trial. This is a sad day for our nation and the world.
