Nor was it the last. In what came to be known as \u201cOperation Pence Card,\u201d Trump spent weeks publicly and privately pushing his vice president to help him <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tim-walz\">stay in power after losing<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re too honest,\u201d Trump berated his vice president in that Jan. 1 morning call.<\/p>\n<p>After they hung up, the president tweeted a reminder for his followers to come to Washington for the \u201cBIG Protest Rally\u201d just days away \u2014 what would become the <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/capitol-siege\">Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The exchanges between the president and his vice president, detailed in special counsel Jack Smith\u2019s <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-capitol-riot-jack-smith-jan-6-e687b91aa27df9f985580c122c5ef34c\">court filing<\/a><\/span> this week, show the extraordinary lengths Trump went to overturn the 2020 election, even as he lays the groundwork <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/election-2024\">to challenge this year\u2019s contest<\/a><\/span>, if he loses.<\/p>\n<p>Pence is no longer standing beside Trump, and has refused to endorse the Republican nominee\u2019s bid to return to the White House. href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/debate-takeaways-vance-walz-harris-trump-5b6f219b555416ff579764048ac238a1\">this week\u2019s debate<\/a><\/span> between Vance and Democratic vice presidential nominee <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/tim-walz\">Tim Walz<\/a><\/span>, Vance declined to say whether he accepted the results of the last election. In a stark retort, Walz said, \u201cThat\u2019s why Mike Pence isn\u2019t on this stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Much of the <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-jack-smith-election-supreme-court-0b9969b480036bb1f7c61a73980d406c\">special counsel\u2019s filing<\/a><\/span> recounts the tumultuous months after the November election, when Trump \u2014 surrounded by allies including <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/steve-bannon-contempt-sentence-federal-prison-trump-77353a10250c36f77b2c1b7d188c5250\">Steve Bannon<\/a><\/span>, his former campaign manager turned podcast host, who is now in jail after a contempt of Congress conviction \u2014 directed his team to fight to keep him in office. The former president, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/25182568-usa-v-trump-unsealed-govt-immunity-motion-1022024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">indicted on criminal charges<\/a><\/span> in the conspiracy to overturn the 2020 election, called the new filing \u201celection interference\u201d and has sought to have the case dismissed.<\/p>\n<p>The day after the election, Trump told Pence to \u201cstudy up\u201d on the claims of voter fraud in the states they had previously won, when they first ran for office together in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just look at all of it, let me know what you think,\u201d Pence recalled of their Nov. 4 phone call. \u201cBut he told me the campaign was going to fight, was going to go to court and make challenges.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That weekend, as Biden was projected the winner, Pence tried to \u201cencourage\u201d Trump \u201cas a friend\u201d to consider all that he had accomplished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou took a dying party and gave it a new lease on life,\u201d Pence told Trump on Nov. 7.<\/p>\n<p>As the days went on, the campaign team was giving Trump what Pence described as a \u201csober and somewhat pessimistic report\u201d on the state of the election challenges they were waging. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPence gradually and gently tried to convince the defendant to accept the lawful results of the election, even if it meant they lost,\u201d the court filing said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t concede but recognize the process is over,\u201d Pence said he told his defeated running mate on Nov. 12.<\/p>\n<p>Four days later at a private lunch, Pence encouraged the president to accept the results and run again in four years. \u201cI don\u2019t know, 2024 is so far off,\u201d Trump responded, according to the filing.<\/p>\n<p>By early December there was a shift. Trump was starting to think about Congress\u2019 role in the election process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor the first time, he mentioned to Pence the possibility of challenging the election results in the House of Representatives,\u201d the filing said, citing a Dec. 5 phone call.<\/p>\n<p>It was the beginning of an intensifying public and private campaign, orchestrated by Trump, that in the coming weeks would bear down on Pence, and ultimately raise concern for his own safety. Some of the details are described in <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/entertainment-donald-trump-14a7cef45932a38a57f2ed98601a7acd\">Pence\u2019s own book<\/a><\/span>, \u201cSo Help Me God.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Trump and his team of outside lawyers, headed by Rudy Giuliani, \u201cdeveloped a new plan\u201d after their legal challenges all failed. It was focused on seven states Trump had lost, guided by a proposal from law professor <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/arizona-fake-electors-charges-john-eastman-2020-1d6df9ac00b810a0d54d6fc4ae97ec57\">John Eastman<\/a><\/span> to create <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/capitol-siege-biden-elections-government-and-politics-presidential-42911f613bee85913dcbcbaeed096b2c\">alternate slates of electors<\/a><\/span> who would claim the defeated president, in fact, had won.<\/p>\n<p>And they turned their attention to Pence. <\/p>\n<p>They falsely claimed that Pence, in his ministerial role as president of the Senate, could decide on Jan. 6 which <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2022-midterm-elections-biden-covid-health-wisconsin-9f415373663df369587552b0b3109a6f\">slates of electors<\/a><\/span> to select, or send them both back to the states for reconsideration, the prosecutors said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey lied to Pence, telling him there was substantial campaign fraud and concealing their orchestration of the plan,\u201d the prosecutor wrote. \u201cAnd they lied to the public, falsely claiming that Pence had the authority during the certification proceeding to reject electoral votes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of Trump\u2019s campaign staff called the plan \u201ccrazy\u201d and referred derogatorily to those organizing it as characters from the \u201cStar Wars bar.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Trump told Pence of his plans for a Jan. 6 rally and expressed the thought it would be a \u201cbig day,\u201d the filing said.<\/p>\n<p>As they had lunch together a couple days later, on Dec. 21, Pence again encouraged Trump not to look at the election as a loss but \u201cjust an intermission.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Pence told the president that if they still came up short, \u201cafter we have exhausted every legal process in the courts and Congress,\u201d then Trump should \u201ctake a bow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Trump would not relent. On Dec. 23, Trump retweeted \u201cOperation Pence Card,\u201d and began to \u201cdirectly and repeatedly pressure Pence,\u201d prosecutors said, and continued \u201csummoning\u201d his supporters to amass in Washington. <\/p>\n<p>On Christmas Day, when Pence called the president to wish him Merry Christmas, Trump told him he had the discretion over certification while presiding in Congress.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know I don\u2019t think I have the authority to change the outcome,\u201d Pence said.<\/p>\n<p>As Jan. 6 approached, the days were becoming more desperate for Trump. The president tore into his vice president during the New Year\u2019s morning phone call. The next day he asked the Georgia secretary of state to \u201cfind 11,780 votes\u201d that could prove he won the election in that state. He later told Pence a senator would be seeking a 10-day delay in certification during the proceedings. \u201cYou can make the decision,\u201c Trump told Pence.<\/p>\n<p>Pence took five pages of contemporaneous notes during a meeting at the White House when Trump directed his team to outline the plan for Pence and said, \u201cWhen there\u2019s fraud the rules change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pence told them, \u201cI\u2019m not seeing this argument working.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conspirators were undeterred,\u201d the prosecutor wrote, and Trump continued to publicly pressure Pence. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope Mike Pence comes through for us,\u201d Trump said at a rally in Georgia.<\/p>\n<p>Meeting privately in the Oval Office on Jan. 5, the defeated president told his vice president once more, \u201cI think you have the power to decertify.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>When Pence was unmoved, Trump threatened to criticize him publicly: \u201cI\u2019m going to have to say you did a great disservice.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This concerned Pence, the prosecutor wrote, and the vice president\u2019s Secret Service detail was alerted.<\/p>\n<p>Trump called Pence later that evening, with his lawyers, to again raise the issue of sending the electors back to the states. Trump called Pence again late that night: \u201cYou gotta be tough tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The next morning, Jan. 6, before Trump took the rally stage, he made one more call to Pence.<\/p>\n<p>When Pence again refused the request, the prosecutor wrote, Trump was incensed.<\/p>\n<p>Trump reinserted remarks targeting Pence into his speech.
