That means, vaccinated people in those groups were 34.5% less likely than unvaccinated people to get sick enough to go to the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, the CDC&#8217;s report had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7237e1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">estimated<\/a> vaccine effectiveness in South America was 51.9% against hospitalization among at-risk groups. A\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590136219300488?via%3Dihub#f0010\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study\u00a0<\/a>by the same group looking at data from 2013 to 2017 estimated effectiveness was around 43% for fully vaccinated young children and 41% for older adults.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>These data come from a <a href=\"https:\/\/sarinet.org\/es\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research network<\/a> coordinated by the Pan American Health Organization, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Uruguay.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The biggest drop in effectiveness this year may be the result of fewer cases from &#8220;A(H1N1)pdm09,&#8221; a strain that has spread since the H1N1 swine flu pandemic in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>In the past, flu vaccines have usually <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33494964\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">performed better<\/a> against H1N1 than H3N2.<\/p>\n<p>While H1N1 dominated nearly all infections last year in South America, this year the World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.who.int\/media\/docs\/default-source\/vcm-southern-hemisphere-recommendation-2025\/sep-2024-sh-recommendations_seasonal_final.pdf?sfvrsn=d06f7ccc_5&amp;download=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">says<\/a> there were more detections of the H3N2 subtype of flu.<\/p>\n<p>If the Northern Hemisphere sees similar patterns of flu virus strains, the study&#8217;s authors wrote that &#8220;health authorities might anticipate similar levels of protection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A CDC spokesperson said that the effectiveness of the vaccine for H1N1 was &#8220;within the range&#8221; of previous seasons.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Overall, flu vaccination reduced the risk of hospitalization by about one-third, which would have a significant impact on disease burden.
