With strong geomagnetic storm conditions predicted, auroras could be visible deep into mid-latitudes (around 50\u00b0).<\/p>\n<p>Due to two incoming solar storms, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center issued a G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm warning for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/g3-strong-watches-effect-04-06-october-two-cmes-route\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/news\/g3-strong-watches-effect-04-06-october-two-cmes-route\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">Oct. 4 to Oct.6<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This is great news for those wishing to see the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/15139-northern-lights-auroras-earth-facts-sdcmp.html\"><u>northern lights<\/u><\/a> because if the predicted G3 conditions are reached we could witness auroras as far south as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/noaa-scales-explanation\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Illinois and Oregon<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>The culprit? Or should I say culprits? Not just one but two powerful solar eruptions that hurled vast plumes of material toward Earth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The eruptions occurred on <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-monster-solar-flare-x7-video\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/sun-monster-solar-flare-x7-video\">Oct. 1<\/a> and Oct. 2, the latter being the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/most-powerful-solar-flare-this-solar-cycle-x-9-earth-firing-line\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/most-powerful-solar-flare-this-solar-cycle-x-9-earth-firing-line\">biggest solar flare since 2017<\/a>! These collisions can spark geomagnetic storms. During such storms, ions slam into atmospheric gases, releasing energy that appears as light. This phenomenon is observed as the northern lights, or aurora borealis, in the Northern Hemisphere, and the southern lights, or aurora australis, in the Southern Hemisphere.<\/p>\n<p>With two CMEs on their way, geomagnetic storm prospects are looking promising. However, the exact timings are difficult to ascertain due to the complex nature of modeling their behavior.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Geomagnetic storms are classified by NOAA using a G-scale to measure the intensity of geomagnetic storms. They range from G5, the most extreme class to G1 minor class storms. Check out <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/3-day-forecast\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.swpc.noaa.gov\/products\/3-day-forecast\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">NOAA&#8217;s 3-day forecast<\/a> for the latest timings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But remember, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/space-weather\">space weather<\/a> is similar to Earth&#8217;s weather in that it is unpredictable and challenging to forecast. While geomagnetic storm warnings of this level are uncommon, they can still sometimes fizzle to nothing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Possible impacts for both span from early on the 4th through early on the 6th, which aligns with SWPC issuing a G3 Watch for all three days,&#8221; space weather forecaster and meteorologist Sara Housseal wrote in a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SNHWx\/status\/1841961455681167863\" data-url=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SNHWx\/status\/1841961455681167863\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\">post on X.<\/a> &#8220;Timing and strength can vary, as always, but a key force here will be the opportunity for the first CME (X7) to pre-disturb the environment ahead of the second CME (X9), which could amplify activity,&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"see-more see-more--clipped\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet hawk-ignore\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Both SWPC and NASA have published models including the CMEs associated with both the X7 and X9 flares.
