Why you must pay attention to this spooky-sounding bowel movement, according to health experts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Boo \u2026 poo?<\/p>\n<p>In the spirit of spooky season and in celebration of gut health, we\u2019re talking ghost poops and phantom feces.<\/p>\n<p>What is a ghost poop? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/12\/ibs-or-irritable-bowel-syndrome-may-be-caused-by-gravity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u2018ghost poop\u2019<\/a>\u00a0is a term used to describe when\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/05\/24\/ozempic-users-report-gross-side-effect-join-the-s-t-the-bed-club\/\">one\u2019s stool sinks\u00a0<\/a>to the bottom of the toilet and seemingly vanishes without a trace,\u201d gut health expert and registered dietician\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/nutritionbyjulie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Julie Balsamo<\/a>\u00a0previously <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/20\/what-is-ghost-poop-and-why-is-it-exploding-on-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told The Post<\/a>. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A ghost poop leaves no evidence of its exit.  <span class=\"credit\">luckybusiness \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That \u201cwithout a trace\u201d includes an absence of evidence when you wipe \u2014 and experts say it is a scary good sign.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the healthiest bowel movement, really, in a lot of ways,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katescarlata.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kate Scarlata, MPH, RDN<\/a>, a Boston-based registered dietitian, gut health expert and cohost of\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/the-gut-health-podcast\/id1725647541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Gut Health<\/a>\u201d\u00a0podcast, recently told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.self.com\/story\/ghost-poop-gut-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SELF<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>There are a few conditions that contribute to spooky scat. <\/p>\n<p>The reason these poos seem to disappear? They are heavier and, thanks to fiber, sink faster. <\/p>\n<p>Scarlata explains, \u201cUnlike floating stools, which may be buoyant due to excess gas, or malabsorption of carbs or fats, ghost poops are packed with fiber, which gives them a heft that helps them sink and vanish.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>A lack of gut muscles are aligned to push out poo in a single, cohesive movement.  <\/p>\n<p>And how about the ghostly absence of toilet paper proof? <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe lack of residue points back to a good balance of fluids and fat in your poops since stool with too much water or malabsorbed fats can be \u2018messy\u2019 and \u2018mashed-potato-like,&#8217;\u201d Scarlata says. <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re more in the mashed-potato camp, Scarlata says you need not fear as \u201cwe all will have different kinds of poops one day to the next.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image phantom activity of your feces, and experts note that not having a ghost poo does not mean you are unhealthy.<\/p>\n<p>However, a lack of fiber may be to blame for your less-than-stellar stool. <\/p>\n<p>While\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsfhealth.org\/education\/increasing-fiber-intake\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the American Heart Association recommends<\/a>\u00a0at least 25 to 30 grams <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/23\/lifestyle\/idip-diet-can-cause-13-weight-loss-in-a-year-study-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">of fiber<\/a> a day to help regulate bowel movements, control blood sugar and reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke, most Americans only get about 15 grams daily.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image regular.<\/span> Some stand-out fiber foods are avocado, berries, beans, and whole grains,\u201d <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">California-based registered dietician and nutritionist\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/amandasauceda.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amanda Sauceda<\/a>\u00a0previously <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/06\/20\/what-is-ghost-poop-and-why-is-it-exploding-on-tiktok\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told the Post<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Too much fiber and not enough water can also keep the golden goal of the ghost poop out of reach or out of the bowl, as fiber has a harder time moving through the gut without water.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/health.clevelandclinic.org\/healthy-poop-shape-type-color\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the Cleveland Clinic<\/a>, \u201cghost poop\u201d is considered an optimal \u201cfour\u201d on the Bristol Stool Chart \u2014 a research tool that \u201cclassifies feces\u201d into seven different categories to tell you about the health of your bowel movements.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The Bristol Stool Chart can also be a helpful tool in learning about your poop.  <span class=\"credit\">University of Bristol<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A \u201cType 4\u201d on the BSC indicates a thin and \u201csnakelike\u201d poop that is also smooth and soft in texture.<\/p>\n<p>Sauceda advised that \u201chard, pellet-like poop\u201d and poop with \u201ca lot of cracks on the surface\u201d are both not \u201chealthy\u201d \u2014 ranking as a 1 or a 3 on the BSC.<\/p>\n<p>To achieve a smooth and \u201csnakelike\u201d ghost poop, people should up their fiber and their hydration.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to keep your movements smooth is to <a are raised over your hips and your upper body is tilted forward in a squat, the muscle that forms a sling around the rectum can relax, cutting down on straining, constipation and hemorrhoidal risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPhysiologically, it\u2019s better to poop at that angle,\u201d Dr. Gina Sam, director of the\u00a0<a spectral stool every time you go. <\/p>\n<p>As Sauceda noted, \u201cIt isn\u2019t ideal 100% of the time because you can\u2019t observe any changes in your poop.
