must-have foods for ultimate liver function<\/span><\/a> \u2014 avocados, olive oil, oily fish, nuts, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/10\/lifestyle\/is-green-tea-really-natures-ozempic-what-experts-say\/\">green tea<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/29\/lifestyle\/rise-and-grind-experts-reveal-the-best-time-to-drink-coffee\/\">coffee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/13\/lifestyle\/sniffing-a-lemon-can-ease-annoying-motion-sickness-doctor\/\">Florida-based gastroenterologist\u00a0<\/a>frequently shares <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/10\/lifestyle\/stomach-doctor-reveals-daily-diet-for-gut-and-liver-health\/\">the details of his diet <\/a>with his 1.7 million TikTok followers\u00a0to inspire them to adopt gut- and liver-friendly eating habits.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), the picks comes as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC10877219\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new research emerges<\/a> about non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/17\/lifestyle\/lack-of-sleep-could-be-a-factor-in-a-silent-epidemic-shares-the-same-effects-of-alcoholism-expert\/\">the so-called \u201csilent epidemic\u201d<\/a> that affects about one in four American adults.<\/p>\n<p>As its name implies, NAFLD is marked by excess fat in the liver of people who consume little or no alcohol.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The primary cause is obesity, along with metabolic risk factors such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obstructive sleep apnea. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you have fatty liver disease, you\u2019re always going to want to combine dietary changes with lifestyle changes like exercise at least four to five times a week, be at a healthy weight if you\u2019re overweight, and avoiding <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/01\/03\/lifestyle\/there-is-no-safe-amount-of-alcohol-one-can-drink-if-you-want-to-avoid-this-disease-study\/\">liver toxins like alcohol<\/a>,\u201d <span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Salhab<\/span> advised.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avocados<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Avocados are rich in anti-inflammatory vitamin E. <span class=\"credit\">sola_sola \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Salhab said that besides being a healthy source of fat and fiber, avocados contain \u201cvitamin E, which we know is anti-inflammatory for the liver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eating an avocado a day has also been <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/20\/lifestyle\/eating-this-one-fruit-every-day-leads-to-better-sleep-heart-health-new-research\/\">linked to improved sleep quality and cardiovascular function<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/30\/lifestyle\/eating-avocados-may-lower-diabetes-risk-for-women-study\/\">decreased risk of Type 2 diabetes<\/a> in women. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Olive oil<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Using olive oil as a topping preserves beneficial compounds. style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/01\/lifestyle\/6-easy-hacks-for-success-with-the-mediterranean-diet\/\">Mediterranean diet<\/a> and sometimes called\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/10\/14\/380k-of-olive-oil-stolen-in-greece-as-prices-skyrocket\/\">liquid gold<\/a>,\u201d is the queen of fats. It is<\/span> monounsaturated and packed with antioxidants and other healthy compounds.<\/p>\n<p>The potential <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/02\/02\/lifestyle\/why-you-should-take-a-spoonful-of-olive-oil-each-day-for-your-health\/\">benefits of olive oil<\/a> include reduced risk of dementia and cardiovascular disease and relief of constipation. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to cooking with olive oil, Salhab suggests regularly using a drizzle as a topping, \u201cBy eating it like this, sometimes you\u2019re able to preserve some of the more beneficial compounds within the olive oil that may get lost if it\u2019s cooked,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Oily fish <\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Salmon and other oily fish are rich in liver-boosting omega-3s.   <span class=\"credit\">Vladimir \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Salhab recommends two servings of oily fish, such as salmon or herring, per week. <\/p>\n<p>His advice is echoed by Lauri Wright, a registered dietitian nutritionist and professor at the University of South Florida College of Public Health, who previously told <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/10\/lifestyle\/from-salmon-to-shark-here-are-the-best-and-worst-fish-for-your-health-according-to-experts\">Fox News<\/a>, \u201cSalmon is among the best choices for healthy fish; it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/05\/lifestyle\/eating-fish-during-pregnancy-may-lower-autism-risk-by-20-study\/\">high in omega-3s<\/a> that help cardiovascular\u00a0and brain health \u2014 and also high in protein.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Wright also noted, \u201cResearch shows that omega-3 consumption decreases overall mortality from heart disease.\u00a0Further, omega-3 provides a modest reduction in\u00a0high blood pressure\u00a0and a significant reduction in triglycerides.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nuts <\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Walnuts are a healthy source of unsaturated fat and they contain vitamin E, which is anti-inflammatory for the liver. <span class=\"credit\">Atlas \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Salhab recommends regular consumption of nuts like walnuts, pine nuts, pistachios, cashews and pecans. He reports, \u201cThey\u2019re a healthy source of unsaturated fat, but they also contain vitamin E, which we know is anti-inflammatory for the liver.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Walnuts are good for the body and the mind.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/07\/lifestyle\/alzheimers-patients-could-help-alleviate-symptoms-by-eating-this-food-study\/\">Researchers at the National Institute on Aging<\/a>\u00a0have found that eating them<\/span> could help enhance memory in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/10\/lifestyle\/alzheimers-app-could-be-key-for-newly-diagnosed-patients\/\">Alzheimer\u2019s patients<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These nuts may also be good\u00a0<em>for<\/em>\u00a0the nuts, as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/11\/10\/men-who-munch-nuts-can-significantly-improve-sperm-quality\/\">research has linked<\/a>\u00a0eating walnuts to improved sperm quality.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Green tea<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Green tea is high in catechins, which are antioxidants. <span class=\"credit\">Grafvision \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Salhab says the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of green and black tea make them a wonderful addition to a daily diet.<\/p>\n<p>Tea leaves contain catechins, a type of polyphenol and flavonoid\u00a0that protect our cells from damage as we age. <\/p>\n<p>Tea leaves contain more catechins than other food and drinks, and <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/01\/19\/lifestyle\/green-tea-is-known-for-its-health-benefits-it-can-make-you-happier-too\/\">green tea<\/a>, which undergoes less processing from leaf to cup than other tea varieties, tends to retain its catechins.
