And over the last few days, there have been multiple coronal mass ejections from the surface of the sun.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-twitter-tweet embed--float-none embed--size-medium lazyload\" data-require=\"third-party\/twitter-widgets\">\n<div class=\"embed__content-wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today&#8217;s X9 (R3) flare was prolific, but impulsive (imagery courtesy of jhelioviewer). Still, the flare was associated with a CME and analyses and model runs are being conducted at this time. Updates will come later, stay tuned! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lMGQOIoR4l\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pic.twitter.com\/lMGQOIoR4l<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center (@NWSSWPC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NWSSWPC\/status\/1841881547575632088?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">October 3, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Two of these &#8220;CMEs&#8221; ejected out of Sunspot AR3842, a big hole in the lower center of the sun. This gives us less than an hour&#8217;s &#8220;heads up&#8221; as to the exact magnitude and impact of each wave of CME.<\/p>\n<p>Scientists are typically able to get an initial indication (estimate) almost immediately after the explosion on the sun&#8217;s surface.<\/p>\n<p>The two flares of interest were measured at X7.1 and X9.1, quite high on the solar flare scale and plenty strong enough to produce mid-latitude auroras.<\/p>\n<h2>What causes the northern lights?<\/h2>\n<p>An aurora borealis occurs when these large and dense solar ejections collide with the molecules in the Earth&#8217;s upper atmosphere.\u00a0 Our magnetic field causes the particles to be largely re-routed toward our Poles, hence why it is so much more typical to see the northern lights that farther north you live.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\"><span class=\"img embed__content\"><img alt=\"aurora-explanation.jpg \" height=\"349\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets3.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2024\/10\/04\/5605ffc6-43ba-4ee2-a511-7a518de860e0\/thumbnail\/620x349\/1e1b887f98a9669815b69477331db623\/aurora-explanation.jpg?v=0736ad3ef1e9ddfe1218648fe91d6c9b 1x, https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2024\/10\/04\/5605ffc6-43ba-4ee2-a511-7a518de860e0\/thumbnail\/1240x698\/509cc3a6767caaabbced9c1a31980a6a\/aurora-explanation.jpg?v=0736ad3ef1e9ddfe1218648fe91d6c9b 2x\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\"><span class=\"embed__caption\">WBZ-TV graphic<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                CBS Boston<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When we have large ejections and strong geomagnetic storms the lights can seen farther south.<\/p>\n<p>These storms are measured on a &#8220;K index.&#8221; Typically, when the K index is 7 or higher that indicates a higher chance of auroras at lower latitudes (including New England). Also, give yourself a view of as much open sky as possible without any obstructions. Other than that, good luck.
