He\u2019s very cunning.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWalters had previously interviewed Lyle and his brother Erik in prison for \u201c20\/20.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tO\u2019Donnell followed her advice. But two years ago, when a documentary was released that featured new evidence that Lyle and Erik were molested by their father, O\u2019Donnell spoke out in support of the siblings on social media and in the press. \u201cI got a call from Lyle\u2019s wife \u2013 I didn\u2019t even know he had a wife \u2013 asking if I would talk to him,\u201d O\u2019Donnell says. \u201cHe called me on Mother\u2019s Day last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLyle and Erik are currently serving life sentences without the possibility of parole for the murder of their parents, Jose and Kitty, in 1989.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tO\u2019Donnell and Lyle became fast friends. \u201cWe talk a lot,\u201d O\u2019Donnell says. \u201cI told them I would do what I could with whatever dwindling fame I have to bring light to their story. I said, \u2018It\u2019s not the 90s, Lyle. I\u2019m not on that show anymore.\u2019 I think if you feel strongly about something and you want to try to help society, you can use your voice because the children who are abused in their homes don\u2019t have a voice. It\u2019s up to the adults who were once those children to speak for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tO\u2019Donnell becomes emotional talking about <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/columns\/rosie-odonnell-documentary-service-dogs-children-autism-1236132440\/\">meeting Lyle last year when she made a trip to see him in prison in San Diego<\/a>. \u201cI saw Lyle and gave him a hug,\u201d she says, choking back tears. \u201cThen Erik came over to me, hugged me, and whispered in my ear, \u2018Thank you for loving my brother.\u2019 It was very, very moving to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI caught up with O\u2019Donnell a day after it was announced that a court hearing has been set for Erik and Lyle as Los Angeles District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n considers new evidence that they were allegedly molested by their father. At the same time, Ryan Murphy\u2019s Netflix series, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/monsters-the-lyle-and-erik-menendez-story\/\" id=\"auto-tag_monsters-the-lyle-and-erik-menendez-story\" data-tag=\"monsters-the-lyle-and-erik-menendez-story\">Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story<\/a>, continues to bring renewed interest to the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>What was your reaction when you heard about the D.A. and the new court hearing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI got a little bit of a heads up from the guys and their lawyers. So I knew was coming. I was beyond excited.\u00a0I knew that from having spoken to them that they were both afraid to hope it could be what exactly it turned out to be. As soon as the news dropped, I sent them a text and said, \u201cIt\u2019s really happening. Now, put that smile on your face. Here we go.\u201d This is what they\u2019ve been waiting for for so many decades, and it\u2019s about time. I think that we, as a society, it\u2019s time that we said, \u201cWe made a mistake, and we didn\u2019t understand what we understand today.\u201d It\u2019s kind of a miracle, but so deserving. I\u2019m so thrilled for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>When was the last time you spoke to Lyle?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLast night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>How are they doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThey\u2019re excited. They\u2019re happy. I came in two years ago as a cheerleader. I told them then, \u201cYou\u2019re going to get out of there.\u201d They didn\u2019t really believe me, but I believe that the wrong will be righted. They\u2019re still reticent to believe it\u2019s going to happen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Did you always think this day would come?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI did, actually, because of the new evidence. Our culture was just not ready in 1989 or the early 90s to talk about this subject at all. But we\u2019ve been through so much as a country in those 35 years. As a society, we now understand that boys are, in fact, sexually abused at a very high rate, almost the rate of girls. So, it\u2019s a fallacy to think that men don\u2019t do that to young boys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>When do you think they will be released?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSooner than later.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Ryan Murphy told me yesterday that <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/columns\/ryan-murphy-menendez-brothers-out-of-prison-christmas-1236167921\/\">he thinks they could be out by Christmas<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI would be surprised if it were in the next 30 days. I don\u2019t think they\u2019re going to make them wait very much longer. Ryan did them a service by doing them a disserve. [O\u2019Donnell previously criticized \u201cMonsters\u201d as being inaccurate.] Ryan is a talented filmmaker with his own style and stamp. I just don\u2019t know that this situation, this true-life story, necessarily played into his wheelhouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>But you could see how the show put more of a spotlight on the case and possibly pushed things forward.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI think everyone who brought attention to it should be commended, including \u201cMonsters.\u201d I\u2019m glad that it happened. I\u2019m not one to say it did or didn\u2019t help. I just know, in my opinion, it could have been much more accurate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Have you become sort of a surrogate mother to them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI feel like a big sister in a way. Lyle is one of the most lauded prisoners in the California prison system. You can\u2019t ignore that. If he was sort of the psycho who was screaming at everyone and a maniac, would he have done hospice for the dying prisoners? Would he have done all of the things that he did that allowed him to finally get moved from San Francisco down to his brother because he had ten years straight without one infraction? Nobody can mask their mental illness that much in 35 years. To be the extraordinary inmates that they both are is pretty damning testimony as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>What kind of impact do you think <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/tv\/news\/kim-kardashian-menendez-brothers-freed-prison-1236167842\/\">Kim Kardashian advocating for their release has had<\/a>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI think it\u2019s fantastic. She\u2019s one of the most famous people in the world and she demands a crazy amount of media attention. I\u2019ve never met her. I don\u2019t know her. I think it\u2019s great that she champions some causes the way she does, and more people should do that when they believe in something. I think she has helped the district attorney come to this conclusion right now. There have been many postponements since they put this in over a year. They\u2019ve had this folder and all the evidence and all the facts for a year, but it wasn\u2019t until after Ryan Murphy and Kim Kardashian \u2014 to give them both credit and in whatever way they want \u2014 that it happened. So bravo to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Are you going to reach out to Kim?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI wouldn\u2019t know how to do that. Maybe I can call Kathy Griffin to get her number [Laughs.]<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>If or when Lyle and Erik are released, will you be waiting outside the prison for them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIf they wanted me there, of course. But I don\u2019t want to overshadow things. Their family has been waiting for them. All of their mother\u2019s relatives, all of their cousins, something like 70 people are waiting for this part of their family to be returned. I\u2019m happy to see them or take them to dinner. It\u2019s going to be a very, very hard transition. They\u2019re going to need a lot of therapy to figure out how to be in the world after having been in prison for 35 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t<strong>Where will you take them to dinner?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tI\u2019ve always told Lyle that I will take him to Nobu because he thinks that\u2019s the place to go. Sometimes, I would talk to him at night, and I\u2019d say that my friends and I went to Nobu for lunch.
