Three scientists \u2014 Svetlana Mojsov, Dr. Joel Habener and Lotte Bjerre Knudsen \u2014 involved in the development of the drug, known as semaglutide, won the <a href=\"https:\/\/laskerfoundation.org\/winners\/glp-1-based-therapy-for-obesity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024 Lasker-DeBakey Clinical Medical Research Award<\/a>, often considered an indicator of whether a specific breakthrough or scientist will win a Nobel Prize.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1v3qb8m000j3b6mym7lzw27@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mojsov, a biochemist and associate research professor at the Rockefeller University, and Habener, an endocrinologist and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, helped identify and synthesize GLP-1. Pendlebury identifies \u201cNobel-worthy\u201d individuals by analyzing how often fellow scientists cite their key scientific papers throughout the years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1v3q3kh000h3b6mis1uppp3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The two key figures are Demis Hassabis and John Jumper, the Google DeepMind inventors of the AlphaFold Protein Structure Database \u2014 an AI program that decodes the 3D structures of proteins from amino acid sequences that at least 2 million researchers around the world have used.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1v3quh7000r3b6m9vqgtp7f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            AlphaFold acts as a \u201cGoogle search\u201d for protein structures, providing instant access to predicted models of proteins, accelerating progress in fundamental biology and other related fields.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1v3quh7000s3b6mpx1s20ae@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Since the pair\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-021-03819-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">key paper was published in 2021<\/a>, it has been cited more than 13,000 times, which Pendlebury described as an \u201cexceptional number.\u201d Out of a total of 61 million scientific papers, only around 500 have been cited more than 10,000 times, he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1v3quh7000t3b6mfyjik895@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jumper and Hassabis have already won the <a href=\"https:\/\/laskerfoundation.org\/winners\/alphafold-a-technology-for-predicting-protein-structures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Lasker<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/breakthroughprize.org\/Laureates\/2\/P1\/Y2023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Breakthrough prizes<\/a>.
