{"id":110759,"date":"2024-10-05T18:02:13","date_gmt":"2024-10-05T11:02:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=110759"},"modified":"2024-10-05T18:02:13","modified_gmt":"2024-10-05T11:02:13","slug":"star-citizen-developer-under-fire-for-7-day-work-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=110759","title":{"rendered":"Star Citizen developer under fire for 7-day work week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\"><em>Star Citizen<\/em> developer Cloud Imperium is reportedly mandating its staff work seven days a week leading up to a major event this month.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\"><a href=\"https:\/\/insider-gaming.com\/star-citizen-developer-cloud-imperium-games\/\">Insider Gaming reported this week<\/a> that Cloud Imperium management emailed staff instructing the studio\u2019s workforce to \u201cdouble down over the next 18 days to make sure that once again we create an amazing experience for our community.\u201d The \u201cdoubling down\u201d apparently means mandated seven day workweeks for the next two weeks for anyone working on CitizenCon, which is scheduled for Oct. 19 in Manchester, England.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">Cloud Imperium management reportedly said in an email that all staff are required to work both Saturday and Sunday for the next two weeks. All staff must be in-office \u2014 Cloud Imperium has locations in Los Angeles; Austin, Texas; Manchester, England; and Frankfurt, Germany \u2014 except for Sunday, for which being in-office is still encouraged, according to Insider Gaming. Breakfast and lunch will be served on the weekend. In exchange for that time worked, Cloud Imperium will give the workers time off in lieu (TOIL) instead of overtime pay. Insider Gaming reported that Cloud Imperium had been letting its employees work 12 \u201cpre-approved\u201d hours of overtime in exchange for TOIL since July 2024. The time off, however, will be granted only once <em>Star Citizen<\/em>\u2019s single-player game <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2016\/10\/10\/13226604\/star-citizen-delayed-squadron-42-citizencon-2016\">Squadron 42<\/a><\/em> is released. If an employee leaves the company before that, they forfeit their earned time off.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">Cloud Imperium declined to comment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">The problem is that <em>Squadron 42<\/em> was announced in 2012 (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2016\/2\/15\/10997622\/star-citizen-made-a-big-change-in-how-its-sold\">but split off from <em>Star Citizen<\/em> in 2016<\/a>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.polygon.com\/2020\/12\/28\/22203055\/star-citizen-squadron-42-release-date-beta-delayed-alpha-testing-funding\">has seen lots of delays in the decade since<\/a>. There\u2019s no expected release date, which puts into question the likelihood of that earned time off ever coming to fruition. In the U.K., there\u2019s no legal requirement to pay hourly employees time-and-a-half, as it is in the U.S. due to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Salaried employees are not guaranteed overtime compensation in either the U.S. or the U.K., per their respective labor laws. Employment Lawyers Association chair Caspar Glyn told Polygon that for salaried employees, the use of TOIL would just be an additional benefit. But its legality comes into question depending on a person\u2019s contract.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">\u201cWhether the TOIL terms are lawful would depend on a close read of the contract,\u201d Glyn said. \u201cNormally TOIL would be banked and then paid if the contract is terminated or granted as time off. The contingent element attached to hours already worked may breach the contract depending on how pay is structured and may offend the minimum wage depending on pay levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">Similarly, its legality in the U.S. offices depends largely on the type of contract a person is on. Salaried workers in the U.S. who make less than $43,888 annually are eligible for overtime pay, as are hourly workers. Come January 2025, however, <a href=\"https:\/\/workforce.com\/news\/overtime-laws-by-state\">U.S.-based workers with salaries lower than $58,656<\/a> annually will become eligible for overtime pay.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">U.K. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acas.org.uk\/working-time-rules\/the-48-hour-weekly-maximum\">employers must abide by the Working Time Regulations<\/a>, which is why Cloud Imperium management mentioned in its email (as reportedly by Insider Gaming) that U.K. employees \u201cneed to be mindful of the hours they work and are asked to have 11 hours outside of work in each 24-hour period.\u201d To put it simply, U.K. workers can work a maximum of 13 hours every 24 hours before they must take 11 hours off. (The U.S. has no laws that regulate how many hours a person can work in a single day.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\">If there\u2019s an emergency or a workplace uses a shift-based system, this doesn\u2019t apply. But Glyn told Polygon that a \u201cwork deadline is most unlikely to be viewed as an emergency.\u201d Similarly, U.K. workers can\u2019t work more than 48 hours per week, averaged over 17 weeks, Glyn said \u2014 unless they opt out in their contract. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidirect.gov.uk\/articles\/working-time-limits-48-hour-week#\">Working Time Regulations<\/a> require that workers have one day off every seven days, but that can be averaged over two weeks, meaning that workers would need two days off after working two weeks straight.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _11x6rb9h ku7vx11 ku7vx10 t0irya0\"><em>Star Citizen<\/em>, as you may have guessed by the long development time, has had some troubles along the way, <a href=\"https:\/\/robertsspaceindustries.com\/funding-goals\">despite having raised $726,452,503 from its players<\/a>. It also has <a href=\"https:\/\/massivelyop.com\/2024\/03\/19\/star-citizens-2022-financials-offer-additional-information-about-investors-and-their-expected-returns\/\">at least $64 million in private investments<\/a>. The multiplayer <em>Star Citizen<\/em> is available to play in early access, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/the-launch-of-star-citizens-biggest-update-has-been-a-shambles-and-players-are-frustrated-this-is-embarrassingly-bad\/\">but its big update from 2023<\/a> was \u201cembarrassingly bad,\u201d per PC Gamer.
