Why, after so many years, is this case back in the public consciousness?<\/p>\n<p>Thank social media, Netflix, Kim Kardashian \u2014 and Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gasc\u00f3n, who announced this week that his office is reexamining evidence. <\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Read on to get a handle on the latest developments of this decades-old case. <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">The Menendez brothers are incarcerated for killing their parents<\/h3>\n<p>In August 1989, Jose and Kitty Menendez were watching television in the living room of their Beverly Hills home when their two sons walked in and shot them to death. At the time of the murder the two men were 18 and 21. <\/p>\n<p>It took two trials to convict the brothers of their parents&#8217; murders. <\/p>\n<p>Two juries deadlocked in 1994 after Lyle and Erik Menendez testified that they shot their parents in self-defense. The prosecutors claimed the men planned the murder ultimately with the goal to claim their parents&#8217; multimillion-dollar estate. <\/p>\n<p>In the second trial, Judge Stanley Weisberg limited testimony related to their claims of sexual abuse. But, he said, his office has a &#8220;moral and ethical obligation&#8221; to review the evidence. That evidence includes a photocopy of a letter from one of the brothers to another family member mentioning him being a victim of molestation. Another is testimony from one of the members of the hit Latin band Menudo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/18\/arts\/television\/menendez-brothers-menudo-roy-rossello-documentary.html\">who said Jose Menendez <\/a>molested him in his early teens while he was an executive at RCA Records. Many true crime junkies have made videos reexamining the Menendez trials, their crime and discussing how their alleged abuse by their parents may have contributed to their actions. <\/p>\n<p>This new generation of attention on the case <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/tv\/tv-news\/tiktok-instagram-inspired-monsters-the-erik-and-lyle-menendez-story-1236007308\/\">contributed to a new, controversial Netflix series<\/a> from Ryan Murphy called <em>Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,\u00a0<\/em>which revisits the trials.<\/p>\n<p>But Erik Menendez bashed the series. In a statement shared by his wife, Tammi Menendez, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TammiMenendez1\/status\/1836967482013229168\">on X<\/a>, he criticized the show, saying it created a misleading portrayal of him and his brother.
