In the process, she amassed an archive of records that she said could help thousands of other veterans and their loved ones bolster their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/victims-camp-lejeunes-water-poisoning-found-justice-final-deadline-cla-rcna164572\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">challenging water contamination cases<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cIt\u2019s become very personal,\u201d said Jessie Hoerman, 55.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Hoerman, an attorney in St. Louis, has spent the last two years scouring eBay, antique stores and national archives to find muster rolls, phone directories, yearbooks and other materials that could substantiate her family\u2019s claim.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Now, she plans to share what she believes is the largest private collection of Camp Lejeune materials with the veterans named in her documents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI want to go and find these families,\u201d she said. \u201cI want to give these hard copies back.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"styles_inlineImage__yAWZ0 styles_medium__OMa6x styles_portrait__NRWbO\"><picture class=\"styles_image__1qciH\" data-testid=\"picture\"><source media=\"(min-width: 1000px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-560w,f_avif,q_auto:eco,dpr_2\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241002-leo-case-mn-1015-987215.jpg 2x, https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-560w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241002-leo-case-mn-1015-987215.jpg 1x\"\/><source media=\"(min-width: 320px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_avif,q_auto:eco,dpr_2\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241002-leo-case-mn-1015-987215.jpg 2x, https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241002-leo-case-mn-1015-987215.jpg 1x\"\/><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/media-cldnry.s-nbcnews.com\/image\/upload\/t_fit-760w,f_auto,q_auto:best\/rockcms\/2024-10\/241002-leo-case-mn-1015-987215.jpg\" alt=\"Leo Case\" height=\"3016\" width=\"2056\"\/><\/picture><figcaption class=\"caption styles_caption__Pe5JC\" data-testid=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption__container\" data-testid=\"caption__container\">Leo Case was stationed at Camp Lejeune after earning a Navy Cross for valor during World War II.<\/span><span class=\"caption__source\" data-testid=\"caption__source\">Courtesy Jessie Hoerman<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"\">In one of the largest water contamination cases in U.S. history, up to 1 million people who lived or worked at Camp Lejeune from August 1953 to December 1987 may have been exposed to a drinking water supply contaminated with chemicals that have been linked to severe health problems, federal health officials said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Multiple sources contaminated the wells, including waste from a nearby dry-cleaning facility and leaks from underground storage tanks on base, according to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">There were extremely high levels of trichloroethylene, tetrachloroethylene, vinyl chloride and benzene \u2014 colorless chemicals that can cause several diseases, including cardiac defects and some cancers, the ATSDR said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Case died of bowel, colon, liver and lung cancer in 1976.
