Exit polls are equally as grim as audiences express their unhappiness with the sequel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThat unhappiness is translating into a troubled opening at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/box-office\/\" id=\"auto-tag_box-office_1\" data-tag=\"box-office\">box office<\/a>, where the Warner Bros. movie is coming in well behind expectations. The divisive sequel earned a soft $20 million on Friday, including $7 million in previews, for a projected launch south of $50 million. Rival studios show the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/joaquin-phoenix\/\" id=\"auto-tag_joaquin-phoenix_1\" data-tag=\"joaquin-phoenix\">Joaquin Phoenix<\/a>\u2013<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/lady-gaga-0\/\" id=\"auto-tag_lady-gaga-0_1\" data-tag=\"lady-gaga-0\">Lady Gaga<\/a> film opening anywhere from $42 million to $47 million (one studio even thinks $40 million or less).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHeading into the weekend, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/joker\/\" id=\"auto-tag_joker_1\" data-tag=\"joker\">Joker<\/a> 2<\/em> was expected to do $50 million to $60 million. That was down from the $70 million <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/joker-folie-a-deux-tracking-box-office-1235999562\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/joker-folie-a-deux-tracking-box-office-1235999562\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">expected three weeks ago<\/a> when the pic first came on tracking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn 2019, <em>Joker<\/em> debuted to a dreamy $96.2 million on its way to a record-shattering worldwide total of $1 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPhillips\u2019 polarizing, R-rated sequel \u2014 which made its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival to <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/joker-folie-a-deux-reviews-1235991525\/\">mixed reviews<\/a> \u2014 is a genre-busting, music-infused film that strays outside the comfort zone of the typical fanboy-fueled comic book pic. More worrisome than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/joker-folie-a-deux-box-office-previews-1236024313\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/joker-folie-a-deux-box-office-previews-1236024313\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Thursday\u2019s night gross<\/a> is terrible exit scores on PostTrak, with audiences giving it a half-star out of five, similar to the Thursday night score for Francis Ford Coppola\u2019s <em>Megalopolis<\/em>, which bombed in spectacular fashion last weekend with $4 million after earning a D+ CinemaScore. (<em>Joker<\/em>\u2018s PostTrak could ultimately change as the weekend goes on.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tEven superhero movies that don\u2019t work at the box office usually earn decent CinemaScores. Marvel Studios\u2019 <em>The Marvels<\/em>, which opened to a dismal $46.2 million last year, earned a B. Ditto for fellow Warners\u2019 film <em>The Flash<\/em>, which opened to a problematic $55 million domestically. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFanboy sites were quick to point out the historical meaning of a D grade for <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/joker-folie-a-deux\/\" id=\"auto-tag_joker-folie-a-deux_1\" data-tag=\"joker-folie-a-deux\">Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux<\/a><\/em> late Friday night. And the first <em>Joker<\/em> didn\u2019t even earn an A but a B+.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tWhile 2019\u2019s <em>Joker<\/em> earned comparisons to the earlier works of Martin Scorsese, the sequel is a far slower journey that focuses on the interior lives of its two leads. Critics have praised the movie\u2019s overall beauty, its performances and its crafts but dinged it for its narrative. \u201cFor a movie running two-and-a-quarter hours,\u00a0<em>Folie<\/em>\u00a0<em>\u00e0\u00a0Deux<\/em>\u00a0feels narratively a little thin and at times dull,\u201d <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/joker-folie-a-deux-review-joaquin-phoenix-lady-gaga-todd-phillips-sequel-1235989963\/\">wrote <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em>\u2018s<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/joker-folie-a-deux-review-joaquin-phoenix-lady-gaga-todd-phillips-sequel-1235989963\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-reviews\/joker-folie-a-deux-review-joaquin-phoenix-lady-gaga-todd-phillips-sequel-1235989963\/\">chief film critic David Rooney<\/a> out of Venice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tRegardless of its box office performance, the movie still hopes to be a major player in the Oscars race, particularly for Phoenix and Gaga\u2019s performances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tOverseas, <em>Joker 2<\/em> opens everywhere this weekend, save for Japan and China, where it launches in the coming weeks. Warners is hoping for a foreign debut of $80 million to $85 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux<\/em> reunites Phillips with Phoenix, who returns in the titular role after winning the Oscar for best actor for his portrayal of Arthur Fleck\/Joker. Neither Phillips nor Phoenix was sure about making a sequel and, for a time, contemplated putting on a Broadway show instead, before ultimately committing to the movie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe first <em>Joker<\/em> cost just $55 million to produce before marketing. After its success, Phillips\u2019 was given a net production budget of $190 million to $200 million for the second installment. Part of that went to bringing aboard  Gaga in a role inspired by the comic book character Harley Quinn (the filmmakers are hoping she will lure in female moviegoers).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMuch of the film consists of fantasy musical numbers starring the couple, who meet while Arthur is in Arkham Asylum, awaiting trial for his crimes from the first movie. However, neither Warners nor Phillips is comfortable calling it a straight-up musical, given that only two of the characters sing, versus a traditional musical, which usually has scores of people participating in the numbers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe studio\u2019s marketing materials have steered clear of highlighting the film\u2019s numerous musical sequences, just as they did when selling <em>Wonka<\/em>, an official musical. Warners isn\u2019t alone; Paramount also didn\u2019t market <em>Mean Girls<\/em> as a musical.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tPhillips is well aware that the sequel is unorthodox, as it doesn\u2019t fully follow through on the ending of <em>Joker<\/em>, which sees Arthur embrace his alter ego.
