The reality star and Skims founder said the brothers\u2019 actions were \u201cnot excusable\u201d but that their life sentences without the possibility for parole are questionable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cWe should not deny who they are today in their 50s,\u201d Kardashian wrote in her essay. \u201cPhysiologically and psychologically, time changes us, and I doubt anyone would claim to be the same person they were at 18. I know I\u2019m not!<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Kardashian\u2019s appeal comes amid renewed interest in the Menendez case. Netflix recently began streaming a Ryan Murphy true-crime drama titled <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/video\/national-7c12b6b51da7494f875a7bf7d7630432\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/81506509\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">The streamer is also releasing its own documentary<\/a> on the subject next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThere should have been a police response and we would have been arrested,\u201d Erik says in the documentary, <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/erik-menendez-admits-lying-police-parents-murders-8722990\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">according to People magazine.<\/a> \u201cWe had no alibi. The gunpowder residue was all over our hands. Attorneys for the men argue that under today\u2019s understanding of sexual abuse, they would not have been convicted of first-degree murder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Prosecutors in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/los-angeles\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Los Angeles<\/a> announced on Friday that they are reviewing new evidence in the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Los Angeles county district attorney, George Gasc\u00f3n, said during a news conference that the guilt of Erik Menendez, 53, and his 56-year-old brother, Lyle Menendez, was not in question, and his office was reviewing the case with a view to resentencing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The new evidence, Gasc\u00f3n said, includes a letter written by Erik Menendez that his attorneys say corroborates the allegations that he was sexually abused by his father.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The brothers\u2019 attorney Mark Geragos has said the family always believed they should have been charged with manslaughter rather than murder. But after jury trials \u2013 the brothers were tried separately \u2013 ended in deadlock, jurors in a third trial were not offered a manslaughter option.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The brothers, 21 and 18 at the time of the murders, admitted they fatally shot their entertainment executive father, Jose Menendez, and their mother, Kitty Menendez, in 1989. They said they feared their parents were about to kill them to prevent the disclosure of the father\u2019s long-term sexual molestation of Erik.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Prosecutors claimed the murders were motivated by greed and committed because they feared they would be cut out of their parents\u2019 will. There was no room for empathy, let alone sympathy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Their conviction came soon after OJ Simpson\u2019s acquittal, with Kardashian implying, as others have, that Los Angeles prosecutors at the time had no stomach for a controversial trial outcome. Kardashian\u2019s father, Robert Kardashian, was part of Simpson\u2019s defense team, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gq.com\/story\/kim-kardashian-men-of-the-year-cover-2023\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">and she has spoken of him as her inspiration to study law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Kardashian\u2019s commitment to criminal justice reform has helped secure the commutation of several prisoners\u2019 sentences.
