The new treatment stopped the disease from advancing for an average of about two years. <span class=\"credit\">Mark Kostich \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Guardian reported that a group of patients in that precarious state were given a cocktail of amivantamab, a monoclonal antibody, and lazertinib, a tyrosine kinase inhibitor \u2014\u00a0keeping them alive and progression-free for an average of 23.7 months. <\/p>\n<p>Sufferers who received the standard treatment, a drug called osimertinib, averaged 16.6 months of progression-free survival, the outlet revealed.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>The findings come as experts reportedly hail a \u201cgolden age\u201d of cancer research that is leading to better comprehension and better treatment methods. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s amazing to see this new combination shows longer cancer control than osimertinib, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/10\/lifestyle\/lung-cancer-pill-osimertinib-shows-earth-shattering-results-in-5-year-study\">which was itself a breakthrough treatment only a few years ago<\/a>,\u201d said Martin Forster, the UK trial chief and a medical oncologist at University College Hospital, said. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cBetter understanding of the biology that drives lung cancers has guided the development of these targeted therapies,\u201d Forster explained.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The findings come amid what is being referred to as a \u201cgolden age\u201d of cancer research. <span class=\"credit\">Dragana Gordic \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>More than 1,000 patients were enrolled in the phase 3 trial, conducted during 2020-2022 in multiple countries. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>All were in the advanced stages of the common non-small cell lung cancer, or NSCLC.<\/p>\n<p>They were randomly assigned to either the drug combo or the standard treatment the group of patients would have all have normally received. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy combining these two drugs, which stop the cancer from growing in different ways, we see a significant improvement in progression-free survival rates compared to the drug we currently use,\u201d said Raffaele Califano, a consultant in medical oncology involved with the trail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSurvival rates for lung cancer are still very low compared with other types of the disease and so to see such positive results is a welcome development.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in a golden age of cancer research where a greater understanding of what drives specific cancers is informing new and better ways to beat the disease,\u201d Anna Kinsella of Cancer Research UK told The Guardian. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cResearch like this helps more people to live longer, better lives, free from the fear of cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The FDA gave the go-ahead to the treatment in August. <\/p>\n<p>The Post previously reported that researchers are <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/02\/lifestyle\/banning-gen-z-tobacco-sales-could-prevent-1-2m-lung-cancer-deaths-study\/\">campaigning to ban cigarette sales to Gen Z smokers <\/a>\u2014\u00a0saying that the move would save 1.2 million lives normally lost to lung cancer, over a period of 70 years.  <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><div data-type=\"_mgwidget\" data-widget-id=\"1660802\">\r\n<\/div>\r\n<script>(function(w,q){w[q]=w[q]||[];w[q].push([\"_mgc.load\"])})(window,\"_mgq\");\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/10\/05\/lifestyle\/amazing-new-lung-cancer-treatment-40-more-effective-than-standard-amid-golden-age-of-cancer-research\/\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A new drug combo recently approved by the Food &amp;
