{"id":110976,"date":"2024-10-06T07:38:06","date_gmt":"2024-10-06T00:38:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=110976"},"modified":"2024-10-06T07:38:06","modified_gmt":"2024-10-06T00:38:06","slug":"study-of-new-personalised-cancer-therapies-could-transform-how-the-disease-is-treated-cancer-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hotvideos24.online\/?p=110976","title":{"rendered":"Study of new personalised cancer therapies could \u2018transform\u2019 how the disease is treated | Cancer research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"fluid\"\r\n     data-ad-layout-key=\"-fb+5w+4e-db+86\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-3711241968723425\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"7910942971\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script><br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Scientists are embarking on a large-scale clinical study of new personalised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/cancer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">cancer<\/a> therapies which could give clinicians are real-time view of how well treatments are working.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The \u00a39m partnership between the Francis Crick Institute, five <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/nhs\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">NHS<\/a> trusts, charities and bioscience companies will spend four years examining the effectiveness of new immunotherapy treatments and exploring new ways to detect cancer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The scheme is one of several new research projects given the green light by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology as part of a \u00a3118m package that will create five new hubs across the UK to develop new health technologies, including cheaper scanners, AI cancer diagnoses and testing new drugs more quickly through micro-dosing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The Manifest project, led by the Crick Institute, will examine tumours and blood samples from 3,000 patients who have suffered from cancer in an attempt to identify which biomarkers \u2013 such as genes, proteins or molecules \u2013 might indicate whether someone has an undetected cancer or whether the disease might return.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">This could make the new wave of immunotherapy cancer treatments more effective. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2018\/mar\/03\/immunotherapy-cancer-patients-rheumatoid-arthritis-robin-mckie\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">Immunotherapy<\/a> is seen as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2024\/feb\/04\/first-uk-patients-experimental-messenger-mrna-cancer-therapy-treatment\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">promising form of cancer treatment <\/a>because it stimulates a patient\u2019s immune system to kill tumours, rather than the \u201ccut, burn, poison\u201d approaches of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Prof Samra Turajlic, clinical group leader at the Crick Institute and a consultant medical oncologist at the Royal Marsden hospital, has been treating melanoma, a skin cancer, for nearly 20 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cWhen I started, people were dying from advanced melanoma, usually within six months,\u201d she said. Now more than half of people with advanced melanoma who receive immunotherapy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2024\/sep\/15\/double-drug-treatment-raises-survival-rate-for-half-of-advanced-melanoma-to-10-years\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">survive for at least 10 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">The problem is, Turajlic said: \u201cWe don\u2019t know who will benefit and who will just have side-effects.\u201d And immunotherapies have only been discovered so far to work against certain types of cancer. Biomarkers offer a potential solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cWhat we want to use the biomarkers for is to say whether the treatment is going to work or not,\u201d Turajlic said. \u201cWe believe that no single biomarker is really going to give us the answer, because there is a huge complexity in the interaction between the cancer and immune system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cSo we\u2019re going to take a very large number of measurements from patients: tumour samples, patients\u2019 blood, from the microbiome, and combine that into a test to understand which has the most predictive power. That\u2019s not something that\u2019s been done at scale before.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">They will also be recruiting 3,000 more patients through partnerships with the Royal Marsden and Barts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/cancer\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Cancer<\/a> Institute in London, the Christie in Manchester, NHS Lothian in Edinburgh, and Cambridge University Hospitals. Other partners include the Cancer Research UK Biomarker Centre in Manchester and IMU Biosciences.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Other schemes at five hubs being created by UK Research and Innovation include portable imaging tools to help surgeons identify cancers and remove tumours, and a new cross-NHS digital pathology data network that will pool data for research teams to access.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cCancer is a devastating disease that has touched every family in the UK, including my own,\u201d said Peter Kyle, the science and technology secretary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Those \u201camazing innovations \u2026 could transform the way we treat this awful disease and give hope to those facing it\u201d, he added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThey could open up capacity in our NHS, alleviating the pressures that we can all quite clearly see. They could put UK companies at the forefront of lucrative emerging industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">\u201cThey have the potential to grow the economy \u2013 leveraging our health system and research sector as an engine-room for growth \u2013 and in turn unlocking the funding we need to do even more to back our innovators, and invest in our public services.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1eu361v\">Wes Streeting, the health and social care secretary, said: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2024\/sep\/30\/wes-streeting-considers-reviving-dedicated-cancer-strategy-after-tories-axed-it\" data-link-name=\"in body link\">As a cancer survivor<\/a>, I know how vital an early cancer diagnosis and the latest treatments are.
