They have given shelter to dozens of stranded residents. And they have found alternative ways to distribute food after losing everything.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tsaitw00063b6mq67xjmsl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While hundreds of first responders and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalguard.mil\/News\/Article-View\/Article\/3919179\/national-guard-rescues-hundreds-of-people-in-wake-of-hurricane\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Guard troops<\/a> have been deployed to\u00a0Asheville and nearby communities to help with the anticipated long recovery from Helene, here\u2019s how both neighbors and strangers are supporting each other:\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1ts9kg900003b6mp4bf3uor@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hoyt Johnson turned his lodge in North Carolina\u2019s Little Switzerland, an unincorporated village perched high in the mountains about 30 miles northeast of Asheville, into a shelter. The 42-room <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biglynnlodge.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Big Lynn Lodge<\/a> became a safe haven for dozens of stranded residents and travelers after the storm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tsb0ai000c3b6mg0x8p0bu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019m doing what I can do for people,\u201d said Johnson, who has owned the 100-year-old lodge for 14 years. He said many of his neighbors and his staff have lost everything. \u201cI never, ever would imagine that something like this would happen.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tsb0ai000d3b6mkcorhb3k@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The lodge has hot water, Johnson said, and while it doesn\u2019t have power, helicopters have delivered\u00a0a generator, water, food, diapers and medical supplies. He\u2019s designated eight rooms for use of their showers, a first aid station, a charging station for cellphones and has started to cook hundreds of hot meals.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uvwuf500033b6mm0c1fr8e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere\u2019s no greed here, no panic. The Green River, located about 30 miles southeast of Asheville, is known for its extremely difficult and\u00a0violent\u00a0rapids.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uvwwfb00053b6mxd6t767b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThere was no way to get in there other than the river or via helicopter,\u201d said Hargrove, a a\u00a0freestyle\u00a0kayaking champion.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uvwwfb00063b6m534528nf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Along with friends who also practice kayaking, Hargrove\u00a0has taken supplies down the Green River, searched for survivors in the debris and hiked through steep and muddy mountains, carrying produce, gasoline and propane.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uvwwfb00073b6ma9n0ficg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAs professional kayakers, we really can assess the risk and assess what is feasible and what\u2019s not feasible, depending on the mission that we\u2019re on for that day and what\u2019s the goal,\u201d Hargrove said. \u201cBecause at the end of the day, we\u2019re going to do as much as we can to help these people out, but also keep ourselves safe so we don\u2019t add to the problem\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uvwwfb00083b6m8gigg0jk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Hargrove said he\u2019s met people whose houses were hit by landslides or who fled flooded homes. In these cases, he said, he has tried to get them medical assistance or help them \u201cfind a way to continue with life.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1uvwwfb00093b6ma8onl597@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI love people and want to help people. It hurts me to see people hurting, and so I want to do as much as I can just to give back to the community that has given so much to me,\u201d Hargrove said. \u201cWestern North Carolina has a really special place in my heart, even though I\u2019m not from here. The non-profit lost all its food supply and equipment, said CEO Claire Neal. But within days, the staff switched gears to find donations and set up a new distribution location at the city\u2019s\u00a0farmers\u2019 market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tsht47000w3b6micxr4ot3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPeople have come together in unprecedented ways to support their neighbors,\u201d Neal said. \u201cI\u2019ve have always loved western North Carolina (because) this is a community that takes care of each other, that cares about each other, and we\u2019ve seen that in spades. We\u2019ve seen neighbors checking on neighbors, whole neighborhoods coming together to feed each other.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tsapdu000a3b6mql7wnw1o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Neal said her team is encouraging donations of \u201cshelf-stable\u201d food, diapers, water and other supplies to help \u201cfamilies take care of themselves.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<div data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They have delivered insulin, ice to keep medicines cool, food and other supplies like tarps, batteries and lights, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/mountainmulepackersranch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mountain Mule Packer Ranch<\/a> said in a series of posts to Facebook this week.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tv2nr7001b3b6mm1k1hwby@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mike Toberer <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/hurricane-helene-north-carolina-asheville-f02869c7d01e68f2d7f0553abb82252f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told\u00a0the Associated Press<\/a>\u00a0he decided to bring a dozen of his mules from the ranch about 110 miles east of Charlotte to deliver food, water and diapers to hard-to-reach mountainous areas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1tv38hd001e3b6mnsbtoytq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe have to remain focused on the mission we started out with, and that is getting this mule string in to as many inaccessible places possible to help all that we can in their time of need!,\u201d the ranch wrote on <a
