The only other things on the plate tend to be sauces of butter, cheese or eggs – but plants are off the menu.

This way of eating breaks all the rules in the medical textbooks – so what effects does it have on the body and why are people doing it?

Heart attacks

To get why some people are turning carnivore, it helps to understand why the less-extreme versions of low-carbing have also been gaining ground – and have even been accepted by some NHS doctors.

The medical orthodoxy has long said that we should limit meat intake and fill up on starchy carbohydrates – found in foods like potatoes, bread, pasta and rice – as this is better than getting our calories from fat, which promotes weight gain. And saturated fat, found mainly in meat and animal products, is supposed to raise cholesterol levels, which can cause heart attacks.

The premise behind low-carbing is that the driving force behind our food choices should be how they affect our “metabolic health”, which is linked to our risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes – by far the most common form – most often develops in people who are overweight and who become less responsive to the blood-sugar-regulating hormone, insulin (although it’s unclear which problem happens first).

As a result of such “insulin resistance”, blood sugar goes too high after meals, which puts people at risk of other medical conditions, from heart attacks to blindness to foot amputations. The world’s expanding waistlines mean that rising rates of type 2 diabetes are seen as one of chief threats to public health.

Type 2 diabetes is usually treated with drugs, with people typically having to take more and more medication to control their blood sugar as their insulin resistance worsens with age.

The more recent low-carbing approach involves trying to avoid high blood sugar by eating less of all forms of carbohydrates – not only sugar, but also starchy foods, because starch is quickly digested into sugar. This generally also leads to weight loss and so reduces the insulin resistance.

Anyone cutting out carbs has little choice but to fill up on foods that are high in protein and fat instead. While it is possible to be vegetarian and low-carb, for meat-eaters this typically involves eating more meat, eggs and creamy sauces.

A standard low-carb diet is not carnivorous. People usually still eat some plant-based foods, such as non-starchy vegetables and fruits that are lower in sugar, like berries. For instance, they might make a normal bolognaise sauce and replace the spaghetti with “courgetti” – courgettes cut into ribbons – or have curry with cauliflower florets rather than rice.

Next level

But some take things further. A low-carb diet is often defined as eating less than 130g of carbohydrates a day – about half the normal amount. A very-low-carb diet would be having less than 50g a day – equivalent to one jacket potato, although in practice, potatoes are off-limits, with people typically spending their small carb allowance on vegetables. This is also sometimes called a ketogenic diet, because when someone is eating so little carbohydrate, their cells have to burn fat for fuel instead, a state called ketosis.

Carnivores have taken low-carbing to the next level. There is no official definition – some would say it means eating zero carbs per day, while others say someone should still be classed as a carnivore if they eat mainly meat and animal products.

But there are certainly plenty of people on social media who say they are totally carnivore. Perhaps stung by criticisms of their way of eating, there are many communities on Instagram and Facebook, for instance, where carnivores swap meal tips and discuss the health benefits with enthusiasm verging on evangelical.

The health claims are not just limited to weight loss and reversing type 2 diabetes, according to the posters.

Some say going carnivore has improved health in a host of ways, including leading to better mental health, clearer skin, better gut function, fewer aches and pains, and so on. “The number of conditions people are solving is really quite astounding,” says carnivore Olivia Khwaja, who runs one such community for a US doctor called Dr Anthony Chaffee, which has 500 members (see box below).

It is unclear what to make of these claims. We should probably be wary of anyone saying that a certain diet or lifestyle habit could be a miracle cure for everything that ails us,” says Professor Gunter Kuhnle at the University of Reading.

On the other hand, carnivores and more-moderate low carbers often find that they lose weight and may combine their new diet with exercise regimes – which could explain some of the health benefits seen, says Tracy Parker, nutrition lead at the British Heart Foundation.

“There are knock-on benefits of losing weight – lower blood pressure, lower risk of type 2 diabetes,” she says. “But these diets are very extreme so they come with certain health risks.”

The chief long-term concern is that the high intake of saturated fat will clog people’s arteries and trigger heart attacks.

In fact, randomised trials comparing people on moderate low-carb diets with those on low-fat diets have not generally found that their bad cholesterol levels rise.

There have not yet been randomised trials investigating purely meat-based diets. There has been one warning sign, from a US study of about 2,000 carnivores, which found that their levels of bad cholesterol were raised, although other blood tests used to assess heart health gave good results, and those who had type 2 diabetes saw an improvement in blood sugar levels

Dr Campbell Murdoch, a British GP, says that a few low carbers may experience a rise in bad cholesterol, but it usually affects only those who are slim and muscular. “For most people who are generally insulin resistant and overweight, all their cholesterol numbers improve,” he says.

Fibre

But cholesterol isn’t the only thing to worry about, says Priya Tew, of Dietitian UK, who is a spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association. Cutting out wholegrains, fruits and vegetables means people miss out on fibre, which can lead to constipation.

However, Dr Murdoch says that early studies suggest completely cutting out the fibre from plant-based foods can help some people with inflammatory bowel disease.

More alarmingly, any medical bodies, including the NHS and the World Health Organization also say that eating excessive red meat and processed meat like sausages raises the risk of colon cancer. “As dietitians we are suggesting people reduce their processed meat consumption,” says Ms Tew. “It’s worrying when you see people on social media promoting steak for lunch and sausages and bacon for dinner.”

However, the cancer risk has not been shown in randomised trials, the best kind of medical evidence, but just in population studies that see correlations between consumption of such foods and colon cancer – and some studies have cast doubt on the link.

Is the spread of carnivorism the future of healthy eating or is it taking dangerous risks with your health? It might be too soon to say.

But Ms Tew recommends that anyone thinking of taking it up gets advice from a health professional rather than an influencer. “People should be aware that while these diets can work for one person, that’s just one person, she says. “We don’t know what the impact on the body will be in 10 years’ time.”

A carnivore’s food diary

Olivia Khwaja, a 50-year-old business consultant in Ascot, has been eating a carnivore diet for over 2 years. Most days, her evening meal is a ribeye steak, fried in tallow (or beef fat) – sometimes with a sauce of butter or cheese.

“You tend to go in phases with butter – I think it depends on if your body needs it,” says Ms Khwaja. “At the moment, I’m not interested in butter. The fat on the steak is more than enough to make it tasty.”

Other meals might be lamb chops or chicken thighs. The chicken is sometimes given a crumb coating, but instead of breadcrumbs, she uses crumbs made from ground pork rind. “You can put it in a bit of egg, put it into the pork bread crumbs and put that in the oven. It’s really crispy and lovely,” she says.

In a typical day, Ms Khwaja skips breakfast and has a late lunch of a tin of sardines – fried in butter, of course. Many carnivores follow this approach of “intermittent fasting”, where all meals and snacks are kept within a short window in the day, of 6 hours or so. This is believed to increase the amount of time where the body burns fat for fuel.

Ms Khwaja has not had her cholesterol levels measured but some other tests, including blood sugar and blood pressure, have given excellent results, she says. She has not noticed any adverse effects on her health – and in fact, says she feels better than she ever has.

Ms Khwaja does not find the carnivore diet monotonous. “You start doing it and your relationship with food totally changes,” she says. “You’re not eating it because it looks nice on your plate, or it’s a social thing. You’re eating purely for your own satiation and nutrient absorption, and when you take all the other foods out of the picture, you sense very clearly whether or not you are getting all the nutrients you need.”

<ins class="adsbygoogle"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-format="fluid"
     data-ad-layout-key="-fb+5w+4e-db+86"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-3711241968723425"
     data-ad-slot="7910942971"></ins>

Source link

In the BBC comedy, Gavin and Stacey, when Alison Steadman’s character Pam tries out a “low-carb” diet, she serves herself a dinner of three steaks – with the two extra … Read More

[7

post-111253","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-health","entry
["GET
