The rocks are similar to the volcanic rock under Earth&#8217;s oceans<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Perseverance\u00a0\u2014 a car-sized, remote-controlled mobile lab\u00a0\u2014 has been exploring the dusty basin of this asteroid impact site, dubbed Jezero crater, since February 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Jezero was once flowing with water about 3.7 billion years ago, with evidence of a &#8216;paleolake&#8217; and a long, lost river delta within the rim of this 28-mile-diameter crater.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Fine-grained sand and mud of exactly the consistency known to preserve fossils on Earth were ferried into Jezero by these rivers: fine clay that Perseverance had been sent to explore in <span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">NASA&#8217;s belief that this crater <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blog\/fine-grained-rocks-at-hogwallow-flats\/\">may have once supported alien life<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Every once in a while, you&#8217;ll just see some strange thing in the Martian landscape,&#8217; as one NASA planetary geologist\u00a0<a class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/science.jpl.nasa.gov\/people\/stackmorgan\/\" style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Dr Katie Stack Morgan<\/a><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">\u00a0of NASA&#8217;s Jet Propulsion Laboratory\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">put it, &#8216;and the team is like, &#8216;Oh, let&#8217;s go over there!&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Most of the bluish-black rocks seen on the surface of Mars, like those on &#8216;Mount Washburn,&#8217; are volcanic basalt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Mars is composed mostly of rocks similar to terrestrial basalts called tholeiites,&#8217; according to planetologist and geophysicist\u00a0<a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" class=\"\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.soest.hawaii.edu\/soestwp\/about\/directory\/g-jeffrey-taylor\/\">Dr G. Dr Stack Morgan said, &#8216;because it was so bright and white.&#8217;\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Perseverance captured the photo with its Mastcam-Z, a three-dimensional set of cameras perched at human eye-level on a six-and-a-half foot mast atop the rover.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Mastcam-Z offers a\u00a02-megapixel quality, &#8216;similar to that of a consumer digital camera,&#8217; according to the US space agencies specs, which accounts for the crisp clear image of this rock formation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The camera&#8217;s 3D images offer a resolution of 0.0059 inches per pixel up close, and 0.3 inches per pixel at maximum zoom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">NASA named the novel, arresting white rock, which measures about 18 inches wide and 14 inches tall, &#8216;Atoko Point&#8217; rock actually was.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">SuperCam&#8217;s two lasers and four spectrometers found enough of the mineral feldspar to confirm that this white rock was Anorthosite, a type of rock that has long been theorized but never before documented as existing on Mars,\u00a0Dr Stack Morgan noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Like basalts, anorthosites are also volcanic rocks, but muck more rich in silica compounds, suggesting that this &#8216;Atoko Point&#8217; stone may have emerged from deeper underground that the rocks surrounding it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Further examples of anorthosite could help determine if &#8216;Atoko Point&#8217; had been dragged into the crater via its ancient rivers or was formed underground by lava, and perhaps pulled up by the impact that created\u00a0Jezero crater billions of years ago.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;Seeing a rock like Atoko Point is one of these hints that, &#8216;Yes, we do have anorthosites on Mars,&#8221;
