Then late last month, traders rushed in to make bullish bets after the government\u2019s leaders announced a series of steps to stimulate China\u2019s faltering economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, following a weeklong national holiday, trading in mainland China resumed and investors picked up where they left off. The CSI 300, an index of large companies traded in Shanghai and Shenzhen, jumped more than 10 percent before pulling back to rise by nearly 6 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The pullback appeared to reflect the absence of new measures at a much anticipated news conference in the morning in Beijing by top economy officials. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Before the holiday, the Chinese government had jolted stock markets sharply higher with a package of measures aimed at halting the cycle of falling real estate prices and weakening consumer confidence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/24\/business\/china-cuts-mortgage-rates.html\" title=\"\">central bank<\/a> and other top financial agencies announced on Sept. 24 that they were cutting interest rates, reducing the minimum down payments for mortgages, and encouraging banks to lend more money for investors to buy shares.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Two days later, the ruling <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/27\/business\/asia-stocks-csi-300.html\" title=\"\">Politburo<\/a> issued an uncommonly blunt call for more to be done to help the economy.
