That\u2019s hurting french fry suppliers like Lamb Weston.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zgmiic00003b6mjy9tik9h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lamb Weston, the largest producer of french fries in North America and a major supplier to fast-food chains, restaurants and grocery stores, is closing a production plant in Washington state. The company announced last week that it would lay off nearly 400 employees, or 4% of its workforce, and temporarily cut production lines in response to slowing customer demand.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zjbmri00033b6mzd4cqg20@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shares of Lamb Weston (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/markets\/stocks\/LW\">LW<\/a>) have dropped 35% this year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zionmj001z3b6m3qm7vzwp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The potato giant is oversupplied at a time when demand is sluggish. Restaurant prices<strong> <\/strong>in recent years have increased faster <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/05\/29\/business\/mcdonalds-burger-prices\/index.html\">than grocery store prices<\/a>, leading customers to pull back at fast-food chains.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zitor900243b6mlh360mtc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This shift has taken a toll on Lamb Weston because people are less likely to cook french fries at home. Around 80% of french fries consumed in the United States come from fast-food chains, according to Lamb Weston.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zizupy00293b6mmlyo3oup@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Fast-food chains like McDonald\u2019s are dangling value menus to try to lure customers back. McDonald\u2019s has launched a $5 meal, which includes a McDouble cheeseburger<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>or a McChicken sandwich, small french fries, 4-piece chicken nuggets and small soft drink. But these deals aren\u2019t helping Lamb Weston because people are buying smaller portions of fries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zj07bc002d3b6m2kg9p6ly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cMany of these promotional meal deals have consumers trading down from a medium fry to a small fry,\u201d Lamb Weston CEO Thomas Werner said last week on an earnings call.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zoapw200043b6m5zuqdhku@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lamb Weston did not immediately respond to CNN\u2019s request for comment.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zhxjyu00193b6mgkq3u6z2@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            McDonald\u2019s, its largest customer, accounts for 13% of Lamb Weston\u2019s sales. As McDonald\u2019s goes, so goes Lamb Weston.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zoq90e00023b6mgl2rdrvz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And McDonald\u2019s is struggling. Sales at US restaurants open at least a year fell 0.7% last quarter from the same period a year earlier, dragged down by fewer customers visiting the chain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm1zi1erb001g3b6ms0wvv3av@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Lamb Weston is also highly exposed to other fast-food chains, analyst R.J.
