She has left an indelible mark on the word and an unfillable chasm in our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cHold your kids extra tight tonight and for now please leave us to work through things. We will shout when we need you,\u201d the statement concluded.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nell Smith.  <span class=\"credit\">Instagram \/ @nellsmithmusic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Smith\u2019s cause of death has yet to be confirmed by her family.<\/p>\n<p>However, The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne claimed on Sunday at the rock band\u2019s concert in Portland, Oregon that Smith was killed in a car accident. <\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.threads.net\/@beach.3.0\/post\/DA0C-kqxDNH?xmt=AQGz498OJm1JK9mafFLOLtGJJGs29_uVCFpj72hgiNPUjQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fan footage<\/a> from the show, Coyne, 63, said, \u201cWe have a very sad announcement to make tonight. We have a Canadian friend, her name is Nell. \u2026 We got some very sad messages today that she was killed in a car accident last night and we\u2019re reminded once again of the power of music.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nell Smith performing in Los Angeles. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram \/ @nellsmithmusic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Simon Raymonde, owner of the Bella Union record label that planned to release Smith\u2019s debut album in 2025, also posted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DA1ZBTpy-ZY\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a moving tribute<\/a> to the late star on Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all shocked and devastated to hear of the sudden and tragic passing of our artist and dear friend Nell Smith, over the weekend in British Columbia,\u201d Raymonde, 62, wrote on behalf of Bella Union.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Simon Raymonde and Nell Smith. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram \/ @mrsimonraymonde<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSmith was just 17 and was preparing for the release of her first solo record in early 2025 on Bella Union, made in Brighton with Penelope Isles\u2019 Jack and Lily Wolter,\u201d the statement went on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we all try and come to terms with the awful news, and out of respect to Nell\u2019s grieving family, we are unable to make any further comments at this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Simon Raymonde and Nell Smith. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram \/ @mrsimonraymonde<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At age 12, Smith attended one of The Flaming Lips\u2019 shows in 2018 and bonded with Coyne. She eventually worked with the band on \u201cWhere the Viadcut Looms,\u201d a November 2021 cover album of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds\u2019 music.<\/p>\n<p>Cave, 67, praised Smith and her cover of \u201cGirl in Amber\u201d on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theredhandfiles.com\/forthcoming-album-flaming-lips\/\">The Red Hand Files<\/a> in 2021, writing, \u201cThis version of Girl in Amber is just lovely, I was going to say Nell Smith inhabits\u00a0the song, but that\u2019s wrong, rather she\u00a0vacates\u00a0the song, in a way that I could never do.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nell Smith. <span class=\"credit\">Instagram \/ @nellsmithmusic<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cNell shows a remarkable understanding of the song, a sense of dispassion that is both beautiful and chilling. I just love it. I\u2019m a fan,\u201d the Australian musician added.<\/p>\n<p>Smith created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kickstarter.com\/projects\/nellsmithmusic\/nell-smith-flaming-lips-protege-first-solo-album\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Kickstarter fundraising page<\/a> last year to help fund her debut album.
