Since 2000, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/breast-cancer-asian-american-pacific-islander-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Asian American and Pacific Islander women<\/a><\/span> of any age have seen the largest uptick, with a 2.5% to 2.7% increase per year. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook says a lot of this rise is in the kinds of breast cancer fueled by estrogen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"newsletter_signup \">\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-newsletter-widget embed--float-none embed--size-large embed--type-iframe\" data-ads=\"{\" wordcount=\"\">\n<\/figure>\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;What the researchers have noticed is that periods in young girls are starting at an earlier age, and women are tending to delay their first child, so that&#8217;s more cycles, and more cycles is more surges of estrogen, and potentially that&#8217;s fueling it,&#8221; LaPook said on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/breast-cancer-rates-rising-rapidly-in-women-under-50-new-report-shows\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">&#8220;CBS Mornings Plus&#8221; Tuesday<\/a>, &#8220;We also have obesity. There&#8217;s an enzyme called aromatase fat that converts testosterone to estrogen, so another reason for increased estrogen.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LaPook also spoke with Rebecca Siegel, senior author of the American Cancer Society&#8217;s report, who pointed to <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cancer-deaths-alcohol-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">alcohol as another factor<\/a><\/span> behind why we&#8217;re seeing increases.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s been a binge in alcohol drinking in women in their 30s and 40s, and <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/alcohol-cancer-risk-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">alcohol increases the risk<\/a><\/span> of breast cancer,&#8221; LaPook said. &#8220;About 16% of all breast cancers are from alcohol.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The reasons behind the increases for Asian American and Pacific Islander women are not as well understood, LaPook added.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That group had a low risk and now, wham, they&#8217;re right up to where White women are,&#8221; he said. &#8220;There&#8217;s a big study going on in UC San Francisco that&#8217;s looking into this. And as in the past, we see huge <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/black-women-higher-risk-death-breast-cancer-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">disparity in outcome in Black women<\/a><\/span>. And again, that&#8217;s something that has been the subject of a lot of research.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In order to to better understand cancer disparities, risk and outcomes, the American Cancer Society launched the <a href=\"https:\/\/voices.cancer.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">VOICES of Black Women<\/a> study earlier this year, which aims to enroll over <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/pittsburgh\/news\/voices-of-black-women-cancer-study-details\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">100,000 Black women in the U.S.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The latest report did have some good news, though.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Over the last 33 years \u2014 44% decrease in mortality from breast cancer.
