Breast cancer is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/breast-cancer\/statistics\/index.html#:~:text=Breast%20cancer%20is%20the%20second%20leading%20cause%20of%20cancer%20death,leading%20cause%20of%20cancer%20death.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second leading cause<\/a>\u00a0of cancer death for women in the United States, with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/features\/breast-cancer.html#:~:text=Each%20year%20in%20the%20United,is%20found%20in%20a%20man.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">42,000 women<\/a> dying every year from this cancer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20jtfpt000t3b6mi6vhx76h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These numbers are especially sobering because when breast cancer is caught in its earliest stages, the\u00a0five-year survival rate is as high as 99%. This is why screening is so important, including for younger women,\u00a0whose rate of breast cancer diagnosis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/01\/health\/breast-cancer-report\/index.html.\">has been\u00a0increasing\u00a0<\/a>in recent years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20jtfpt000u3b6m6h98zo07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Women need to know when to start screening for breast cancer. Besides a mammogram, should other tests be done? Who should begin screening earlier? Should women do self-exams, and if so, what should they be looking for? What kinds of normal changes should women expect in their breasts over time?\u00a0Are there steps women can take to reduce their risk of breast cancer? And what should men do?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20jtfpt000v3b6mjkyoaqrr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To help us answer these questions, I spoke with CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen.\u00a0Wen is an emergency physician and adjunct associate professor at George Washington University. She previously was Baltimore\u2019s health commissioner.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20jg7a900023b6m8qn3jejt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>CNN: When should women start screening for breast cancer?<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20jyoaz00103b6mrol53cgv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Dr. Leana Wen:<\/strong>\u00a0Most women should receive a mammogram beginning at age 40 every other year until they reach age 74, according to a recent US Preventive Services Task Force recommendation. (For those\u00a075 and above, the task force concluded that there was insufficient evidence to recommend for or against mammography on a population level. Patients should discuss individual circumstances with their provider.)\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20jyoaz00113b6mjgz1tln7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This was a substantial change from earlier guidance, which was to start every other year mammograms at age 50. This change was made in part because of\u00a0reports that cancer diagnoses have been increasing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/04\/18\/health\/cancer-colon-breast-screening-young-wellness\/index.html\">among younger people<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20jym52000y3b6m5eviqa3t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>CNN: Should other tests besides the mammogram be done?<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k273r00163b6m5op8d9cf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Wen:<\/strong>\u00a0It\u2019s important to separate screening from diagnosis. Screening is done when there are no symptoms. If someone has a positive screening test, additional studies may be done to further determine if this could be cancer.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k273r00173b6m8t54eifk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Depending on the patient\u2019s risk factors, they may receive additional screening tests. For instance, someone with multiple first-degree relatives with breast cancer may be recommended for genetic testing. An individual with prior abnormal results, or who otherwise\u00a0has\u00a0a higher risk of breast cancer, may have\u00a0tests done in addition to the mammogram, such as a breast MRI or ultrasound.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k273r00183b6m4estwkvw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In recent years, there has been a lot of debate among experts about whether younger women with dense breast tissue need these additional screening tests. The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34794600\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American College of Radiology<\/a>\u00a0now recommends a breast MRI in some women with dense breast tissue. Those at higher risk include women with a sister, mother or\u00a0other first-degree relative\u00a0with breast cancer.\u00a0People who have had breast cancer themselves are also at higher risk, as are individuals with prior radiation to the chest from treating other cancers. All these individuals should consult with their primary care provider to determine when they should begin screening, with which tests\u00a0and at what frequency.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k6g43001b3b6mh6i1tena@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>CNN: Should women do self-exams, and if so, what should they be looking for?\u00a0<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k7zk3001i3b6mv2mq8s8h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Wen:<\/strong>\u00a0According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/breast-cancer\/screening-tests-and-early-detection\/american-cancer-society-recommendations-for-the-early-detection-of-breast-cancer.html#:~:text=While%20the%20American%20Cancer%20Society,exams%20should%20never%20be%20done.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Cancer Society<\/a>, research has not demonstrated a clear benefit of regular self-exams, especially when women are also getting screening mammograms.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k7zk3001j3b6mk2y0xjjv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That said, women can still pick up on changes they should report to their doctors. They should know how their breasts look and feel, and not delay seeking care if they notice unexpected changes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k7zk3001k3b6m7t4yhwq5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/breast-cancer\/screening-tests-and-early-detection\/breast-cancer-signs-and-symptoms.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">most common symptom<\/a>\u00a0of breast cancer is a new mass or lump. Many lumps turn out not to be cancer, but it\u2019s crucial to get them checked out.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k7zk3001l3b6mgl11gq2g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Other changes that should prompt women to contact their physicians include nipple discharge, pain or swelling, nipple turning inward and changes in color or the breast or nipple. They should also report swollen lymph nodes in the armpits or near the\u00a0collarbone.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k7zk3001m3b6men1qg5i7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These changes are sometimes detected during daily activities, like showering, brushing hair and getting dressed. This, again, is why women should know how their breasts generally appear and feel, so that they can be on the lookout for any changes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20k7xhb001g3b6mrrpi8l2l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>CNN: What kinds of normal changes should women expect in their breasts over time?\u00a0<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20kaup3001r3b6mohqh4m9s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Wen:<\/strong>\u00a0There are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/conditions-and-diseases\/normal-breast-development-and-changes#:~:text=Buds%20appear%2C%20and%20breast%20and,(the%20areola)%20gets%20larger.&amp;text=Breasts%20are%20slightly%20larger%2C%20with%20glandular%20breast%20tissue%20present.&amp;text=The%20areola%20and%20nipple%20become,the%20rest%20of%20the%20breast.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multiple changes<\/a>\u00a0that occur in breast tissue over the course of a woman\u2019s lifetime. During puberty, breasts become larger,\u00a0and the nipple becomes raised. Women who become pregnant experience significant changes before, during and after pregnancy. Many pregnant individuals report breast swelling, soreness and nipple tingling. Blood vessels in the breasts become more visible and the nipple larger and darker.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20kaup3001s3b6miyyb5ew8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Many women report that their breasts appear different after childbirth, even after breastfeeding has stopped. Then there are changes that occur as they enter menopause. Breast tissue tends to shrink and lose elasticity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20kaup3001t3b6mj67uiynw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These are all normal changes that occur as women go through different life phases. Breast size and texture also change slightly during the menstrual cycle. All of this should underscore why women need to be aware of their bodies so that they can be aware of problems that may arise at different points in their lives.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20kh2jy001w3b6mx2n7z5g4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>CNN: Are there steps women can take to reduce their risk of breast cancer?<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20kiw7p00293b6m1i1gtm1y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>Wen:<\/strong>\u00a0Risk factors like family history or\u00a0cancer history cannot be altered, but there are some that can. Quitting smoking and reducing alcohol consumption, for example, can remove two key risk factors for breast cancer (smoking and heavy alcohol use). Getting\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/07\/28\/health\/one-minute-exercise-cancer-wellness\/index.html\">regular physical activity<\/a>\u00a0can also lower overall cancer risk, as can a nutritious diet with less\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/22\/health\/ultraprocessed-food-cancer-wellness\/index.html\">ultraprocessed\u00a0substances<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20ki9mg00273b6m0xif1aci@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <strong>CNN: Can men get breast cancer?<\/strong>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20kmnyr002e3b6mpsb11305@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yes. We have been referring primarily to women because breast cancer is far more common among women. However, there are men who are diagnosed with breast cancer as well.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20kjrib002c3b6mu1dyvw6v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Men who have significant breast cancer history in their family should speak with their physician about screening recommendations and not hesitate to seek care if they notice breast changes.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm20kolcz00003b6moq8f10p9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In addition, all people assigned female at birth should follow recommendations for breast cancer screening as noted above.
