Ron DeSantis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d00013d5vql5xqbtu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The unusual warning from the Republican-controlled state agency prompted the Democratic chair of the Federal Communications Commission to step in\u00a0on\u00a0Tuesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d00023d5v6ba46ecx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jessica Rosenworcel, the FCC chair, said that stations should not be intimidated for airing political ads.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d00033d5vmtln22bx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe right of broadcasters to speak freely is rooted in the First Amendment,\u201d Rosenworcel said in a statement. \u201cThreats against broadcast stations for airing content that conflicts with the government\u2019s views are dangerous and undermine the fundamental principle of free speech.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d00043d5vqznet6sl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The\u00a0FCC\u2019s\u00a0show of support for the stations is noteworthy\u00a0given the\u00a0federal agency controls broadcast station licenses across the country.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d00053d5vfj0kxnhn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Florida Department of Health, however, cited local statutes in the cease-and-desist letters\u00a0sent\u00a0last week\u00a0to WCJB\u00a0in Gainesville\u00a0and\u00a0WFLA\u00a0in Tampa.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d00063d5v50hrdlif@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The\u00a0threat from the\u00a0health department underscores the intensity of the political battle over Amendment 4, a ballot measure that would enshrine abortion rights in Florida\u2019s constitution.\u00a0The state government led by DeSantis has campaigned aggressively against the amendment, including by running its own TV ads.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d00073d5vb4utznm5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The cease-and-desist letters from John Wilson, general counsel for the\u00a0state\u00a0health department, appear to be part of that campaign. The letters were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Jason_Garcia\/status\/1842646033890746744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first reported<\/a>\u00a0by Orlando investigative journalist Jason Garcia and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/700182-department-of-health-sends-cease-and-desist-letter-to-tv-station-over-abortion-ad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state news\u00a0outlet<\/a>\u00a0Florida Politics.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d00083d5vyajq39y0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the letters,\u00a0Wilson targeted\u00a0an\u00a0ad\u00a0produced\u00a0by the group Floridians Protecting Freedom, which is\u00a0behind the\u00a0\u201cYes on 4 Campaign\u201d in favor of abortion rights.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d00093d5vyr7sh72x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7jJiEE_AkPA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">30-second ad<\/a>\u00a0depicts a woman\u00a0named Caroline who\u00a0became\u00a0pregnant with her second child\u00a0after a\u00a0brain cancer diagnosis.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d000a3d5v7aaje0f9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe doctors knew that if I did not end my pregnancy, I would lose my baby, I would lose my life, and my daughter would lose her mom,\u201d the woman says\u00a0in the ad. \u201cFlorida has now banned abortions, even in cases like mine.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d000b3d5vnk60vp7p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The ad then encourages viewers to vote for the amendment this fall.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d000c3d5v080rqs3x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Wilson\u2019s letter says it is \u201ccategorically false\u201d to claim that \u201ccurrent Florida law does not allow physicians to perform abortions necessary to preserve the lives and health of pregnant women.\u201d Thus, he wrote,\u00a0airing\u00a0the ad is \u201cdangerous\u201d to the public\u2019s health, and the health department could use its legal powers to initiate criminal proceedings.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d000d3d5v6zgqd2bb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Floridians Protecting Freedom responded to Wilson\u2019s letter by calling it \u201cunconstitutional state action\u201d and \u201ca textbook example of government coercion that violates the First Amendment.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d000e3d5vi4w59878@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tuesday\u2019s statement from the FCC chair indicates that she feels the same way.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm212u43d000f3d5vorw94w13@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The health department did not immediately respond to CNN\u2019s request for comment about the FCC rebuke.
