And so consequently, we started thinking, \u2018where would we go?\u2019\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>They settled on Asheville as a place that was \u201cmore climate friendly,\u201d she says. It had milder summers than Austin, less drought and wildfire risk than other places on their list, plus distance from the coast and sea level rise.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt sounded really nice and I looked up hurricanes and tornadoes, and it said basically not a problem here,\u201d Roser says.<\/p>\n<p>Many people have moved to Asheville in recent years in search of a climate haven, says <a href=\"https:\/\/mymosaicrealty.com\/realestate\/agent\/mike-figura\/\"><u>Mike Figura<\/u><\/a>, an Asheville-based real estate broker who studied climatology in college.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Asheville is one of many places facing death and widespread destruction because of Hurricane Helene. A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldweatherattribution.org\/climate-change-key-driver-of-catastrophic-impacts-of-hurricane-helene-that-devastated-both-coastal-and-inland-communities\/\">analysis from the World Weather Attribution group<\/a>, an international association of climate scientists that quickly assesses the impact of climate change on weather events, finds that human-caused climate change made Hurricane Helene\u2019s rainfall about 10% heavier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washington.edu\/news\/people\/meade-krosby\/\">Meade Krosby<\/a>, senior scientist with the climate impacts group at the University of Washington, says she understands why people moved to Asheville looking for a climate haven. \u201cPeople are looking for places they can feel safe,\u201d she says. \u201cI think that&#8217;s a very human response to something that&#8217;s quite scary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Krosby says she finds the concept of climate havens concerning. She notes her city, Seattle, was once thought of as a climate refuge. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/07\/27\/1114075017\/heat-wave-lessons-learned-in-pacific-northwest\"><u>hundreds died in the 2021 heat wave<\/u><\/a>, fewer people think of it that way, she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s really both a privilege and a fantasy to think that we can escape to someplace that&#8217;s perfectly insulated from the climate crisis,\u201d Krosby says. \u201cIs any place without risk? No. And that&#8217;s where I think we get into some trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">\u201cBilled as a climate haven\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Researchers predict <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nclimate3271\"><u>millions of Americans<\/u><\/a> will move because of climate change. A study from the First Street Foundation, a corporation that publishes analyses about climate hazards, found that <a href=\"https:\/\/firststreet.org\/research-library\/climate-abandonment-areas\"><u>more than 3.2 million Americans<\/u><\/a> have already migrated out of areas with increased flood risk.<\/p>\n<p>Some U.S. cities hope to attract some of the displaced. Buffalo, New York and Cincinnati, Ohio have referred to themselves as a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/beinbuffalo.com\/community\/climate-refuge\/\"><u>climate change refuge<\/u><\/a>\u201d and a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cincinnati-oh.gov\/oes\/climate\/climate-protection-green-cincinnati-plan\/\"><u>climate haven<\/u><\/a>\u201d respectively.<\/p>\n<p>In Asheville, Figura has shown homes to people \u201cwho viewed this as a safe haven from wildfires out west and hurricanes that were hitting more coastal areas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kelseylahr.com\/\"><u>Kelsey Lahr<\/u> is one of the newcomers,<\/a> a writer and editor who moved to Asheville from California <a href=\"https:\/\/slate.com\/technology\/2020\/09\/climate-change-migration-happening-now.html\"><u>four years ago to escape wildfires<\/u><\/a>. \u201cHonestly, I just Googled \u2018where are the best places to live for climate change?\u2019\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis area looked like it ranked really highly in safety against natural disasters,\u201d she says. \u201cSouthern Appalachia was kind of this little island of the bright green, like \u2018this is going to be good to go!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lahr, a former park ranger in Yosemite National Park, had lived through several wildfires. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2023\/08\/30\/1196637141\/climate-change-makes-wildfires-in-california-more-explosive\"><u>California\u2019s wildfires are more explosive in part because of climate change<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt got to a point where I was reliably getting evacuated or put on evacuation warning from wildfires at least once a year \u2014 often more than that,\u201d Lahr says. \u201cAfter my last evacuation out of Yosemite, and weeks long displacement, I was like, \u2018I just don&#8217;t think that this is really a way to live.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After she moved to North Carolina her parents followed. Her friend from Colorado moved to Asheville after tiring of breathing wildfire smoke. \u201cThis was just kind of billed as a climate haven,\u201d Lahr says.<\/p>\n<p>While some places are more at risk of climate-related disasters than others, the idea of climate havens has often been a disservice to the public because of a lack of nuance, says<a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/116\/meeting\/house\/111061\/witnesses\/HHRG-116-SY18-Bio-MontanoS-20200930.pdf\"> <u>Samantha Montano<\/u><\/a>, a professor of emergency management at Massachusetts Maritime Academy.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-third-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap third\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cWhat I think people are kind of missing from their interpretation of \u2018climate haven\u2019 is this issue of likelihood,\u201d she says. \u201cJust because it is less likely for a specific disaster to happen in one community does not mean that it is not going to happen in that community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Asheville is far from the coast, North Carolina is vulnerable to extreme rain and inland flood events linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/urldefense.com\/v3\/__https:\/www.citizen-times.com\/picture-gallery\/news\/local\/2024\/09\/26\/tropical-storm-fred-photos-from-2021-wnc-impacts\/75397562007\/__;!!Iwwt!UjJvssHA6_Hq0FCfvp69A-5EK7nYlxdEZeqq9WVitmaJ6P3ZG2QO8hpjBuFmxtvfUCoCAUjbmAbc$\"><u>tropical storms<\/u><\/a> and hurricanes because of its relative proximity to the warm Gulf of Mexico, and also its coastline on the warming Atlantic Ocean, says <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.ncsu.edu\/people\/kathie-dello\/\">Kathie Dello<\/a>, North Carolina state climatologist.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/science\/climate-issues\/ocean\"><u>Oceans absorb most of the extra heat that\u2019s trapped on Earth<\/u><\/a> by planet-warming pollution, which means that storms now form over warmer ocean water than before. Hotter oceans act as fuel for hurricanes and help them get stronger. Global warming also means the air holds more water vapor, making rain storms more intense and deadly. Many Americans don\u2019t have the economic resources to move. \u201cClimate flight will leave behind people and places that are going to be most vulnerable and actually in need of that community support and investment when people leave,\u201d Krosby says.<\/p>\n<p>For many Tribal communities who are tied to their land, moving also isn\u2019t an option, says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.achp.gov\/about\/council-members\/amelia-am-marchand\"><u>Amelia Marchand<\/u><\/a>, executive director of the conservation nonprofit the <a href=\"https:\/\/thepnwlf.org\/\"><u>L.I.G.H.T. Foundation<\/u><\/a> and a citizen of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation in Washington. \u201cCommunities, and families, and people that are connected to lands and waters of a certain place; not just for one or two or three generations but for literally thousands of years,\u201d she says. \u201cThose are relationships and places that cannot be picked up and moved.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-overflow-3-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap overflow\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Lahr says she was fortunate. While she has water damage on her floors and doesn&#8217;t yet know the cost, and while she currently doesn\u2019t have running water, she and her parents are safe and her house is mostly okay. She says for her, Hurricane Helene has underscored the importance of addressing the drivers of global warming, including the burning of fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>Roser says she also is fortunate. While her home currently doesn\u2019t have running water, it was not damaged. As for her family\u2019s recent move? \u201cI mean it seems ironic now because we never experienced a hurricane in Austin,\u201d Roser says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are like, \u2018Boy, I hope you don&#8217;t regret moving here.\u2019 And we don&#8217;t. We don&#8217;t regret it,\u201d she says, adding that she still thinks Austin would have been too hot for them in the long term.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere&#8217;s no outrunning climate change,\u201d Roser says. \u201cIt&#8217;s a global phenomenon.
