Hurricane Milton tore towards Florida&#8217;s Gulf Coast on Wednesday, leaving residents with one final day to evacuate or hunker down before the &#8220;catastrophic&#8221; Category 5 storm is predicted to hit, triggering a life-threatening storm surge.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"paragraph-1\" class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\">With more than 1 million people in coastal areas under evacuation orders, those fleeing for higher ground clogged highways on Tuesday and gas stations <a data-testid=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/gas-stations-run-empty-panic-grips-florida-ahead-hurricane-milton-2024-10-08\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\">ran out of fuel<\/a>, in a region still recovering from the devastating impacts of Hurricane Helene less than two weeks ago.<\/div>\n<p>The storm was on a collision course for the Tampa Bay metropolitan area, home to more than 3 million people, though forecasters said the path could vary before the storm makes landfall late Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. National Hurricane Center described Milton as a &#8220;catastrophic&#8221; and &#8220;dangerous&#8221; major hurricane, packing maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (260 kph), putting it at the highest level on the five-step Saffir-Simpson scale.<\/p>\n<p>Weather conditions were expected to start deteriorating in the afternoon, it said in an advisory overnight.<\/p>\n<p>The White House said U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris would be briefed on the storm at noon and Biden would make remarks later in the afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Liz Alpert, mayor of Sarasota, Florida, said her coastal city just south of Tampa Bay was as ready as it could be.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re as prepared as we can be&#8230; But this is going to be a really, really bad storm,&#8221; she told MSNBC in an interview.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Emotionally for people to just have experienced that (hurricane) two weeks ago, and now here we are again, it&#8217;s really hard on everybody.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Milton is on a rare west-to-east path through the Gulf of Mexico and is likely to bring a deadly storm surge of 10 feet (3 meters) or more of flooding to much of Florida&#8217;s Gulf Coast.<\/p>\n<p>Officials from Biden to Tampa Mayor Jane Castor warned people in evacuation zones to get out or risk death.<\/p>\n<p>Michael Tylenda, who was visiting his son in Tampa, said he was heeding the advice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If anybody knows anything about Florida, when you don&#8217;t evacuate when you&#8217;re ordered to, you can pretty much die,&#8221; Tylenda said. &#8220;They&#8217;ve had a lot of people here stay at their homes and they end up drowning. It&#8217;s just not worth it. You know, the house can be replaced. The stuff can be replaced. Airlines, energy firms and a Universal Studios theme park were among the companies beginning to <a data-testid=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/airlines-cancel-flights-airports-close-florida-braces-hurricane-milton-2024-10-08\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\">halt their Florida operations<\/a> as they braced for disruptions.<\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"paragraph-17\" class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__dark-grey__3Ml43 text__regular__2N1Xr text__small__1kGq2 body__full_width__ekUdw body__small_body__2vQyf article-body__paragraph__2-BtD\">Milton became the <a data-testid=\"Link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/what-made-milton-third-fastest-intensifying-atlantic-storm-2024-10-08\/\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" class=\"text__text__1FZLe text__inherit-color__3208F text__inherit-font__1Y8w3 text__inherit-size__1DZJi link__link__3Ji6W link__underline_default__2prE_\">third-fastest intensifying storm<\/a> on record in the Atlantic, growing from a Category 1 to a Category 5 in less than 24 hours.<\/div>\n<p>&#8220;These extremely warm sea surface temperatures provide the fuel necessary for the rapid intensification that we saw taking place to occur,&#8221; said climate scientist Daniel Gilford of Climate Central, a nonprofit research group. &#8220;We know that as human beings increase the amount of greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere, largely by burning fossil fuels, we are increasing that temperature all around the planet.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>More than a dozen coastal counties issued mandatory evacuation orders, including Tampa&#8217;s Hillsborough County. Pinellas County, which includes St. Petersburg, ordered the evacuation of more than 500,000 people. Lee County said 416,000 people lived in its mandatory evacuation zones.<\/p>\n<p>Mobile homes, nursing homes and assisted living facilities also faced mandatory evacuation.<\/p>\n<p>In Fort Myers, mobile home-dweller Jamie Watts and his wife took refuge in a hotel after losing their previous trailer to Hurricane Ian in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My wife&#8217;s happy. We&#8217;re not in that tin can,&#8221; Watts said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We stayed during Ian and literally watched my roof tear off my house and it put a turmoil in us.
