The sequel to the 2019 Oscar-nominated blockbuster <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/joker-2s-opening-weekend-box-office-is-an-unmitigated-disaster-experts-say\"><u>tanked at the box office in its debut weekend<\/u><\/a>, and review aggregator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rottentomatoes.com\/m\/joker_folie_a_deux\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Rotten Tomatoes<\/u><\/a> shows critics and filmgoers in sync with troubling scores of 33% and 31%, respectively. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Another thing about Joker 2 that both journalists and moviegoers have pointed out: the idea that the film \u2013 particularly <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/joker-2-folie-a-deux-post-credits-scene-ending-explained\"><u>its shocking ending<\/u><\/a> and <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/joker-folie-deuxs-biggest-surprise-is-a-repeat-of-a-controversial-marvel-moment\"><u>implications of who the real Joker is<\/u><\/a> \u2013  is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=5bf84f1c9db1b0c0&amp;rlz=1C5GCCM_en&amp;sxsrf=ADLYWIKPvJYdiVFgfR_7UTuWtR-SDulX6g:1728422825506&amp;q=Joker:+Folie+%C3%A0+Deux+fans&amp;tbm=nws&amp;source=univ&amp;tbo=u&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi3xaTk3P-IAxXZLkQIHXg3JfAQt8YBKAF6BAgVEAQ&amp;biw=1733&amp;bih=824&amp;dpr=2\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>a direct rebuke of the fans who embraced the first film<\/u><\/a> and made it a $1 billion hit.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">\u201c\u2018Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux\u2019s\u2019 Fatal Flaw Is Turning the Fans Into the Villains of the Sequel,\u201d screams <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2024\/film\/columns\/joker-2-todd-phillips-turns-on-fans-folie-a-deux-flop-1236170558\/\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Variety<\/u><\/a>. \u201cFans Say \u2018Joker 2\u2019 Ending Was a Betrayal, but Was It Actually Its Finest Moment?,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-features\/joker-2-ending-angered-fans-1236025470\/\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>THR<\/u><\/a> opined. <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/joker-2-folie-a-deux-review\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Mashable<\/u><\/a> called Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux \u201c(a) middle finger to fans of Lady Gaga, the DC movies, and musicals.\u201d And here\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/joker-folie-a-deux-review-lady-gaga-1235107280\/\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>Rolling Stone<\/u><\/a> for the kicker: \u201c\u2018Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux\u2019 Has a Message for Fans: Go F-ck Yourselves.\u201d Likewise, audience backlash on social media and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=joker+2+fans&amp;sp=EgIIAw%253D%253D\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u>YouTube<\/u><\/a> all echo the same refrain: Joker 2 hates Joker fans. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While that is a legitimate way for some viewers to read the film \u2013 even our critic Siddhant Adlakha said in his <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/joker-folie-deux-review-joaquin-phoenix-lady-gaga-todd-phillips\"><u>Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux review<\/u><\/a> the movie \u201ctemporarily allows a commentary on fandom obsession to sneak its way into the picture\u201d \u2013 it wasn\u2019t the intent of Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/joker-folie-deux-filmmakers-on-answering-the-first-movies-biggest-questions\">director Todd Phillips<\/a> to appear to make fans of his previous Joker film the bad guys of his sequel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">I asked Phillips as much earlier this month at the film&#8217;s press junket and here\u2019s what he told me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>IGN: I&#8217;m watching the film and I am struck by the fact that this is somebody who is essentially a newfound celebrity dealing with a following and a fandom that they didn&#8217;t necessarily think they&#8217;d ever get.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>Todd Phillips:<\/strong> They [Arthur Fleck] didn&#8217;t sign up for it. They didn&#8217;t ask for it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>IGN: And so, then is the film in a way kind of a commentary on fan entitlement or even toxic fandom?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>Phillips:<\/strong> Not so much that to be honest with you, but one of the things that we always thought about <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/movies\/joker\">the first movie<\/a> or one of the things I definitely said enough in <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/2019\/09\/25\/joker-dangerous-movie-joaquin-phoenix-todd-phillips-interview\">defending the first movie when it needed to be defended<\/a> because people said it&#8217;s irresponsible, its use of violence. And I always saw it quite literally the opposite. I thought it was responsible because it was showing the actual real-world effects of violence. It wasn&#8217;t glamorizing gun use in my mind. It was actually showing, &#8220;Oh my God, this is brutal.&#8221; And I think the reality of it maybe is what turned people off, the people that were turned off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">One of the things we tried to continue with here is that same idea is to me \u2014 a really important scene in the movie is when he&#8217;s cross-examining the little guy, Gary. Why? Because it&#8217;s showing you the real-world effects of trauma on a person who witnessed it, right? <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Even beyond just witnessing something horrible. What does that do to you, right? You know what I mean? It&#8217;s two, three years later in the movie and Gary still says he can&#8217;t sleep and he still wasn&#8217;t able to go back to work. These effects of violence was something we really wanted to kind of \u2014 at least that scene addresses some part of it, but not so much toxic fandom honestly, but it&#8217;s a good idea.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>IGN: I&#8217;m just thinking: the idea of, look, the fans want Joker. They can&#8217;t necessarily deal with Arthur. And I&#8217;m wondering, he&#8217;s got fans that show up cosplaying as him, and they&#8217;re basically like, &#8220;Give us Joker, give us the Clown Prince of Crime.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>Phillips: <\/strong>That&#8217;s right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>IGN: It reminds me of the fans. Like, &#8220;Give us Batman, give us the Clown Prince,&#8221; all that sort of thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>Phillips:<\/strong> I guess you&#8217;re right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>IGN: And you guys are pushing back like, &#8220;No, no, I&#8217;m just Arthur.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>Phillips: <\/strong>That&#8217;s right. That is in the movie. But it was never about addressing toxic fandom, but it was about addressing this idea of what happens if this thing gets put upon you, like we were saying, just five minutes ago, but it&#8217;s not actually what you are. And then, what happens in the worst case scenario, if you finally find love in your life or you think you do, but <a class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ign.com\/articles\/joker-2-folie-deux-interview-joaquin-phoenix-todd-phillips-lady-gaga-harley-quinn-bad-romance\">that person is in love with the character that you represent, not the person that you are<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><output class=\"box-wrapper jsx-2673806401\" data-cy=\"article-video\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">I also asked Oscar winner Joaquin Phoenix about whether Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux is a commentary on fandom or fan entitlement, but he largely rejected anything that would inform audiences on how they should read this or any other film.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>IGN: I don&#8217;t know if you remember back in the early &#8217;80s, there was this guy, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Unknown_Comic\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u><strong>The Unknown Comic<\/strong><\/u><\/a><strong>, and his whole shtick was <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9BBZVQ4zBcU&amp;pp=ygUZcmVhbCBwZW9wbGUgdW5rbm93biBjb21pYw%3D%3D\" class=\"link jsx-1337145738 jsx-3925284146 underlined\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><u><strong>he wore a grocery bag over his head<\/strong><\/u><\/a><strong>. And he was on this show, Real People, and it was a phenomenon of The Unknown Comic. And I can&#8217;t even remember any of his jokes, but the minute that guy took the bag off, and that was the big reveal, you never heard from him again. I&#8217;m wondering if there&#8217;s any similarities there with Arthur. People just want the makeup, they want the suit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>Joaquin Phoenix:<\/strong> Of course, yeah. I think they wanted Joker, and I think he realizes that at some point. I think there&#8217;s a moment where maybe he regrets the choices that he&#8217;s made, maybe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>IGN: Do you think the movie or this particular story is a commentary on fandom or maybe fan entitlement? Because they&#8217;re cosplaying basically as their favorite character out there. He&#8217;s got all these fans that show up. And even DC fans are like, &#8220;Oh, give us the Clown Prince of Crime.&#8221; And you guys are like, &#8220;He&#8217;s just Arthur.&#8221; There seems like there maybe is a \u2013<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\"><strong>Phoenix:<\/strong> I don&#8217;t know about that. I really think there&#8217;s probably several themes. I think each person can derive a different kind of meaning from them, and I think that&#8217;s the value of it. I don&#8217;t like it when people, the filmmakers, or the actors really primarily, are like, &#8220;This is the point we&#8217;re trying to make. Pay attention. We&#8217;re talking about you.&#8221; That&#8217;s not how I approached it, but I certainly think that&#8217;s part of it. I don&#8217;t know how you examine celebrity without thinking about that.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">While it may not have been the intent of the creators of Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux to utterly piss off DC fans who loved the original 2019 movie, that is the narrative that has nevertheless surrounded the film and shows no signs of dissipating as the movie approaches its second weekend in release. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph jsx-2269604527\">Perhaps in time Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux will come to be read differently by future viewers \u2013 maybe one day it will be reappraised by critics and viewers alike.
