And it\u2019s interesting the amount of power that people think that I have, which I don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-180skgt\">Rodgers confirmed he spoke to Johnson on Monday night during a \u201cnice call,\u201d but said the owner simply asked him how he was feeling after spraining an ankle in the Jets\u2019 loss to Minnesota in London on Sunday. Johnson and Rodgers said there was no talk of Saleh\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-180skgt\">\u201cWoody has no obligation to let me know what his plans are,\u201d Rodgers said. \u201cI just appreciated the call that he was checking on me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rodgers said the move to fire Saleh was a reminder of how football \u201cis a tough business\u201d and there\u2019s a human aspect to decisions such as this. He cited Saleh\u2019s family, including one of the coach\u2019s seven children with whom he grew close during the team\u2019s practices. Rodgers also reiterated he and Saleh were not at odds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-180skgt\">\u201cI love Coach Saleh,\u201d Rodgers said. \u201cWe have a very solid relationship. &#8230; He was a big reason why I came to the Jets.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The four-time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/nfl\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">NFL<\/a> MVP was acquired by New York in April 2023 from Green Bay. With his arrival came Super Bowl expectations, but Rodgers tore his achilles tendon four snaps into his debut last season \u2013 and the Jets finished 7-10 without him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-180skgt\">New York entered this season with similar aspirations, but a two-game skid and inconsistent play by Rodgers and the offense had Johnson concerned the team was headed in the wrong direction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-180skgt\">Rodgers spoke often about the players taking accountability, himself included. \u201cI\u2019ve got to play better \u2013 I will,\u201d Rodgers insisted. \u201cWe\u2019ve got a lot to play for.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Jets play the Buffalo Bills on Monday night at home and a victory would give them a share of first place in the AFC East.<\/p>\n<p>Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich will be the Jets\u2019 interim head coach the rest of the season. Rodgers said the team is embracing Ulbrich and reiterated some of the coach\u2019s comments on Tuesday that there has to be some change moving forward with new leadership.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-180skgt\">Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett\u2019s status as the primary play caller is uncertain. Hackett and Rodgers have a strong relationship from their time together in Green Bay.
