Andrews shares that she\u2019s teetotal in the name of total body betterment, \u201cI do not consume any alcohol. All types of alcohol \u2014 including red wine \u2014 are going to increase your risk of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/28\/lifestyle\/drinking-alcohol-is-linked-to-six-types-of-cancer-experts-say-its-toxic\">six different cancers<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/alcohol\/index.htm#:~:text=Some%20studies%20show%20that%20drinking,liquor%2C%20are%20linked%20with%20cancer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, alcohol raises the risk of cancers of the mouth and throat, larynx, esophagus, colon and rectum, liver and breast. <\/p>\n<p>Alcohol raises the cancer risk because rather than digesting it, your body breaks it down into a chemical called acetaldehyde, which can damage DNA and prevent the body from repairing itself.\u00a0The more you drink, the greater your risk.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/07\/11\/lifestyle\/cancer-dietitian-reveals-13-ways-to-lower-colon-cancer-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">previous TikTok<\/a>, Andrews said the first and best step you can take to reduce your cancer risk is to cut out alcohol completely. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Processed meats<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>In 2015,\u00a0the World Health Organization\u00a0named processed meat a carcinogen. <span class=\"credit\">Pixel-Shot \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Next up on the chopping block? Processed meats. <\/p>\n<p>Andrews shares, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/15\/lifestyle\/junk-food-processed-meat-could-be-fueling-cancer-in-young-people-docs\/\">Processed meats increase colorectal cancer risk<\/a> at any consumption.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether that\u2019s pepperoni\u2026 or pre-cooked meats,\u201d she continued. \u201cAny consumption of that is going to be increasing your risk of cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Andrews said she specifically avoids deli meats and hot dogs, opting to make her own healthier version with raw sausage and a whole-wheat bun. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Andrews calls out the downsides of hot dogs.  <span class=\"credit\">WS Studio \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her advice is echoed by experts. <\/p>\n<p>In 2015,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/questions-and-answers\/item\/cancer-carcinogenicity-of-the-consumption-of-red-meat-and-processed-meat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the World Health Organization<\/a>\u00a0named processed meat a carcinogen, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iarc.who.int\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Monographs-QA_Vol114.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">noting that there is<\/a>\u00a0\u201csufficient evidence from epidemiological studies that eating processed meat causes colorectal cancer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Processed meats fall under <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/08\/15\/lifestyle\/junk-food-processed-meat-could-be-fueling-cancer-in-young-people-docs\/\">the dubious banner of ultra-processed<\/a> foods. <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/24\/lifestyle\/new-evidence-that-ultra-processed-foods-are-linked-to-cancer-study\/\">Recent research<\/a>\u00a0reported that people who eat 10% more UPFs than others have a 23% higher risk of head and neck cancer. Experts believe the increased cancer risk may be caused by nitrates within the meat that combine with compounds in the body to damage cells.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Soda<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>When eating out, Andrews opts for water or unsweetened tea. <span class=\"credit\">Carlostock \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Andrews abstains from soda, especially when dining out, \u201cI do not order sugary beverages when I go out to eat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Opting instead for water or unsweetened iced tea, she explains that sodas, particularly those with bottomless restaurant refills, equate to a ton of extra calories.<\/p>\n<p>Andrews imparts, \u201cExcess body fat tissue \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/07\/06\/being-overweight-is-linked-to-18-types-of-cancer-new-study\/\">increases the risk<\/a> of 13 different cancers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ultra-processed foods and drinks could lead to an increased risk of developing cancer. <span class=\"credit\">Getty Images\/EyeEm<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/08\/08\/a-sugary-drink-a-day-significantly-raises-liver-cancer-risk-study\/\">The Post previously reported<\/a>, older women who drink just one sugar-sweetened beverage a day have a \u201csignificantly higher\u201d risk of developing liver cancer and dying from chronic liver disease.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">And diet soda drinkers are not exempt, as these beverages typically contain artificial sweeteners like aspartame and Ace-K. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Last year, the World Health Organization\u2019s cancer research division classified aspartame as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iarc.who.int\/featured-news\/aspartame-hazard-and-risk-assessment-results-released\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cpossibly carcinogenic to humans,\u201d<\/a>\u00a0calling for further research on potential health risks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Further, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/heart-health\/sugar-substitutes-new-cardiovascular-concerns\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a 2022 French study<\/a>\u00a0linked aspartame to an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/14\/lifestyle\/diet-coke-or-coke-zero-dietitian-reveals-healthiest-option\/\"><span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">increased risk of stroke and<\/span> Ace-K to a higher risk of coronary artery disease.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/03\/lifestyle\/soda-processed-meats-can-raise-heart-disease-risk-study\/\">Consuming sugary or artificially sweetened drinks<\/a> has also been shown to raise your risk of heart disease.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Red meat<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Red meat en masse can increase the risk of colorectal cancer.  <span class=\"credit\">Sergey Ryzhov \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Andrews, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/06\/lifestyle\/nutrition-experts-reveal-4-foods-to-avoid-to-lower-cancer-risk\/\">red meat is a red flag<\/a>\u00a0when it comes to cancer risk.<\/p>\n<p>She notes that red meat in moderation does not correlate to an increased risk of cancer. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aicr.org\/cancer-prevention\/recommendations\/limit-consumption-of-red-and-processed-meat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consuming more than 18 ounces of red meat<\/a> per week has been associated with an increased risk of colorectal cancer. <\/p>\n<p>Though it\u2019s nutrient-rich, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/06\/lifestyle\/nutrition-experts-reveal-4-foods-to-avoid-to-lower-cancer-risk\/\">red meat contains heme iron<\/a>, which can facilitate the production\u00a0of potentially carcinogenic chemicals.<\/p>\n<p>Andrews shares, \u201cI usually keep to about just one serving of red meat a week, or I just don\u2019t have any at all. When I\u2019m going out to eat or cooking at home, I\u2019ll build my meals around chicken, turkey, fish, seafood or even different types of plant proteins like soy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coffee drinks <\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>While black coffee has myriad health benefits, specialty coffee drinks typically contain a shocking amount of calories. <span class=\"credit\">Adobe Stock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Coffee provides myriad health benefits \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/06\/22\/drinking-coffee-may-reduce-risk-of-getting-liver-cancer\/\">consuming three to four cups of joe a day<\/a> has been shown to reduce the risk of liver cancer and other alcohol-related liver diseases. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/news-releases\/1057683?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A recent study<\/a>\u00a0also found that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/09\/17\/lifestyle\/moderate-caffeine-may-lower-risk-of-cardiometabolic-diseases\/\">moderate coffee consumption can lower the risk<\/a> of developing a combination of diabetes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/06\/lifestyle\/doctor-reveals-5-ways-women-can-lower-their-stroke-risk\/\">stroke<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/04\/lifestyle\/61-of-us-adults-will-have-cardiovascular-disease-by-2050-report\/\">heart disease<\/a>,\u00a0known as cardiometabolic multimorbidity.<\/p>\n<p>However, these benefits are compromised when your cup of coffee veers into dessert territory. If you\u2019re a <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/06\/10\/lifestyle\/dietitian-reveals-how-to-cut-the-sugar-in-starbucks-drinks\/\">Frappuccino fan<\/a>, Andrews recommends opting for a few key changes, \u201cI do like a cold coffee or a blended coffee throughout the summer, but those can get so high in calories so fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She said she gets a kid-sized drink and orders it half-sweet. This hack effectively halves the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/03\/29\/lifestyle\/the-healthiest-drinks-to-order-at-starbucks-according-to-dietitians\/\">sugar and calories of specialty coffee drinks<\/a>, which often pack\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2016\/01\/13\/the-feds-new-sugar-rules-will-sour-your-frappuccino-habit\/\">more sugar per cup<\/a>\u00a0than some of us should be consuming in a day.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">White grains<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Andrews always opts for whole grains over white bread.  <span class=\"credit\">buraratn \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When it comes to grains, Andrews never goes for the white variety. \u201cI\u2019m a whole-grain girl through and through.
