I think he handled himself and showed the world and modeled what civil discourse is. He showed that there was accountability, that there is a system of checks and balances, and frankly, I was very proud of the work that he did,\u201d Redstone said Wednesday during a panel at Advertising Week in New York.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm221ik3p00083d5vj8o0m766@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Redstone said she had expressed her support to Dokoupil directly, but that she\u2019s \u201cvery glad\u201d CBS had Coates on the air to discuss the acclaimed author\u2019s new book, \u201cThe Message.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm221ik3p00093d5votivw17t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cBut we have to also provide the opportunity to challenge him on what he says, just like we challenge everybody else,\u201d Redstone said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm221ik3p000a3d5vlhg5ej07@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Coates, a National Book Award winner, released \u201cThe Message\u201d last week, in which he portrays Israel\u2019s treatment of Palestinians as a moral crime, one that many Americans can\u2019t or won\u2019t face directly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm221ik3p000b3d5vvst4m5sk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During a daily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/07\/media\/cbs-ta-nehisi-coates-tony-dokoupil-interview\/index.html\">editorial meeting Monday<\/a>, CBS News executives said Dokoupil had violated the network\u2019s editorial standards during the Coates interview, where the host compared the book to \u201cextremist\u201d writings and challenged Coates for excluding the Israeli perspective in his book.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2227pk500093d5vrfvuucug@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI have to say, when I read the book, I imagine if I took your name out of it, took away the awards, the acclaim, took the cover off the book, publishing house goes away, the content of that section would not be out of place in the backpack of an extremist,\u201d Dokoupil said to Coates.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm221ik3p000c3d5vho8eps0f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Wednesday, Redstone said the network\u2019s executives made a \u201cbad mistake\u201d in how they handled the ensuing controversy over the interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm221ik3p000d3d5v3eujb7m3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI\u2019ve been working with the CEOs. I\u2019ve been working with the woman who does a lot of our diversity training, and I think we all agree that this was not handled correctly, and we all agree that something needs to be done,\u201d Redstone said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2239qd2000e3d5vqhym5223@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Redstone has long been a supporter of Israel and has worked in the past year on efforts to combat antisemitism.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm223cddc000j3d5v1jgx5qu1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPeople need to understand the core issues and what they\u2019re talking about. We need to have better education about how to challenge people in the civil way, which, frankly, I think Tony did,\u201d Redstone said at the event. \u201cWe need to have, most important, standards that are applied to everyone on all issues. You can\u2019t have one standard for somebody who has one position and another standard for somebody\u00a0who<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>has another position.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2226uz400023d5v4u350gjv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the wake of internal complaints over the interview, CBS News and Stations president and CEO Wendy McMahon and her top deputy Adrienne Roark enlisted the network\u2019s standards and practices unit to conduct a review of the discussion. The news division\u2019s race and culture unit was involved as well.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2226f4300003d5vr46czrn6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A person familiar with CBS\u2019 review defended the network\u2019s actions on Wednesday, telling CNN the issue was \u201chandled respectfully.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm2226ymy00043d5v4mstdyyc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis issue was red hot, and there were many, many, many people in the organization who were concerned about how that interview was handled,\u201d the person said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm223cckt000h3d5vry2hbpvy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Several correspondents and producers had expressed concern with Dokoupil\u2019s conduct in numerous instances, beyond the Coates interview.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm223d0aw000l3d5vpkbkpylv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s clear this was an issue that required a process and serious conversations and serious reviews, and that\u2019s what happened.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm227qzc800023d5vgk7w912y@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            During a \u201cCBS Mornings\u201d staff meeting on Tuesday, Dokoupil stood by his questioning of Coates, a person close to the show told CNN.
