Sky-gazers won\u2019t want to miss the event since it may be the last time the comet will be seen in the night sky for another 80,000 years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000i3b5vqzzlglnj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The comet successfully reached perihelion, its closest point to the sun in its orbital path around the parent star, on September 27, and was visible for those in the Southern Hemisphere in September and early October. Now, the icy body is on its way out of the inner solar system and will be visible to those in the Northern Hemisphere in mid-October through early November,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.nasa.gov\/Watch_the_Skies\/2024\/10\/02\/ancient-oort-cloud-comet-to-make-first-documented-pass-by-earth-in-mid-october\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to NASA<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000j3b5vjtr6452f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On Saturday, the comet will come within about 44 million miles (nearly 71 million kilometers) of Earth. The comet is making its first documented flyby of our planet, according to NASA. Bill Cooke, lead of NASA\u2019s Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, recommends a pair of binoculars for enhanced viewing of the comet.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000m3b5v11yz2z01@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s not going to zing across the sky like a meteor. It will just appear to hang there, and it will slowly change position from night to night,\u201d Cooke said. \u201cIf you can see (the comet) with your unaided eye, (using) the binoculars will knock your socks off.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000n3b5vxnp6yq38@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Tsuchinshan\u2013ATLAS<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>was discovered separately in 2023 by observers through China\u2019s Tsuchinshan Observatory and an Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System, or ATLAS, telescope in South Africa, hence the comet\u2019s namesake, according to NASA.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000o3b5vwiwxzpun@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The celestial object comes from the Oort Cloud, \u201ca mostly spherical collection of comets barely bound to our Solar System thousands of times (farther) away from the Sun than we are,\u201d said astronomer Dr. Teddy Kareta, a postdoctoral associate at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, in an email.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000p3b5vfyfx73f8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Scientists were unsure if the comet \u2014 composed of ice, frozen gases and rocks \u2014 would survive its trip around our solar system\u2019s parent star. But the comet appears to be largely intact and \u201cmade it with flying colors,\u201d Cooke said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000q3b5v2hfqwro4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Because of its proximity to the sun,\u00a0Tsuchinshan\u2013ATLAS\u00a0will experience an effect known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/glossarytest.ametsoc.net\/wiki\/Forward_scatter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forward scattering<\/a>, which will cause the comet to appear at its brightest around Wednesday due to sunlight reflecting off its gas and debris. But because of the sun\u2019s harsh glare blocking the comet, it\u2019s unlikely that the celestial body will be visible in the sky until a few days later, Cooke added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000r3b5vyco998ih@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If all goes well,\u00a0Tsuchinshan\u2013ATLAS\u00a0will return at this point in its orbit in around 80,000 years, but comets can be unpredictable \u2014 it\u2019s possible that another planet\u2019s gravity could change the comet\u2019s course, Cooke added.\n    <\/p>\n<div data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/image\/instances\/cm226i7dg00013b5vt7whtui7@published\" class=\"image image__hide-placeholder\" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-name=\"c2023a3_30sept2024_masi.jpg\" data-component-name=\"image\" data-observe-resizes=\"\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\" data-original-ratio=\"0.5625\" data-original-height=\"1125\" data-original-width=\"2000\" data-url=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/c2023a3-30sept2024-masi.jpg?c=original\" data-editable=\"settings\">\n<div class=\"image__container \" data-image-variation=\"image\" data-breakpoints=\"{\" image--eq-extra-small=\"\">\n       <picture class=\"image__picture\"><source height=\"1125\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 1280px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/c2023a3-30sept2024-masi.jpg?q=w_1110,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1125\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 960px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/c2023a3-30sept2024-masi.jpg?q=w_1015,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1125\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(min-width: 480px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/c2023a3-30sept2024-masi.jpg?q=w_1160,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><source height=\"1125\" width=\"2000\" media=\"(max-width: 479px)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/c2023a3-30sept2024-masi.jpg?q=w_680,c_fill\/f_webp\" type=\"image\/webp\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media.cnn.com\/api\/v1\/images\/stellar\/prod\/c2023a3-30sept2024-masi.jpg?q=w_1110,c_fill\" alt=\"C\/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan\u2013ATLAS appears brighter in an image taken by the Virtual Telescope Project three days after the comet reached its perihelion.\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1125\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/source><\/picture>\n    <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000s3b5vt2937fou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For those unable to see\u00a0Tsuchinshan\u2013ATLAS\u00a0in the night sky, the Virtual Telescope Project in Italy will host a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.virtualtelescope.eu\/webtv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">live feed of the comet<\/a>\u00a0on Wednesday during its brightest point, and on Saturday, at its closest distance<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>to Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000t3b5vfnecal78@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cFor many people, and especially children, seeing a bright comet in the night sky is a beautiful and life-changing experience,\u201d Kareta said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000u3b5v7m2kogfw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEven if every couple of years a comet might be barely bright enough to be seen with your naked eye, comets that have a potential to be easily visible to many are rare. If you can try to see it, you should \u2014 and you should take whoever you can with you so they can experience it too.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000v3b5v5molgzft@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The next full moon, which peaks on October 17, could interfere with comet viewing, as its illumination hampers the visibility of other objects in the night sky. Called the hunter\u2019s moon, it will be a supermoon and the closest of the year at 222,095 miles (357,428 kilometers) away from Earth.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000w3b5vs5hk3dub@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there are other chances to view celestial bodies, as a second comet, known as Comet C\/2024 S1 (ATLAS), may make its appearance in the night sky in late October,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/earthsky.org\/space\/comet-c-2023-a3-sep-oct-2024-tsuchinshan-atlas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to EarthSky<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm226rbea000x3b5v1200njyw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, sky-gazers can anticipate a busy meteor shower season to close out 2024.
