James Cleverly, Robert Jenrick and Kemi Badenoch &#8211; but just two golden tickets.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">You can read more about the three still in the running <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c51y2lqzxl8o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">here<!-- --><\/a>.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The standout development in Tuesday\u2019s round of voting was James Cleverly propelling himself not just into the lead, but being miles in front.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">He managed 39 votes, a number even some in his own camp acknowledge was a bit higher than they were expecting.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">His performance is put down to making the most of his <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/c07nmezgjrjo\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">conference speech last week<!-- --><\/a> and the efficient hoovering up of quite a lot of <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cg339l7xkr2o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">MPs who had previously backed the former cabinet minister Mel Stride.<!-- --><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In a race with 121 votes available in total, if every Conservative MP votes, 41 is sufficient to guarantee a place in the final two, since both rivals cannot outpoll you. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">(Incidentally, I am told that outgoing leader Rishi Sunak did not vote, meaning there was actually an electorate of 120).<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">Frontrunner James Cleverly<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Either way, Cleverly is very nearly there, assuming he does not go backwards.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The working assumption of all of the campaigns is that he is going to make the final pair.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And so it is now a tussle between Kemi Badenoch and Robert Jenrick for second place.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Jenrick came second in this latest round of voting, with 31 votes \u2013 but managed to lose two votes from the previous round.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Badenoch came third with 30, just one vote behind, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cd7x04vnng1o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">but did gain two votes.<!-- --><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">And there are now 20 votes looking for a new home after the widely expected elimination of the former security minister Tom Tugendhat.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It may not seem like a big number, but 20 is one heck of a lot in an electorate of 121.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cJames is an irrelevance now. It\u2019s all now a battle between us and Kemi\u2019s team,\u201d said a Team Jenrick insider.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cTom\u2019s supporters are closer to our side than hers,\u201d they added. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cWe\u2019ll be ahead in the end.\u201d<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It is a characteristic blast of confidence from Jenrick\u2019s camp, who have exuded plenty of it throughout.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But there is no shortage of psychology in all of this too &#8211; and you might need a splash of outward confidence when you have just been knocked off top spot and managed to go backwards.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 class=\"sc-518485e5-0 kRvAla\">High stakes race<!-- --><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\" class=\"sc-18fde0d6-0 dlWCEZ\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Supporters of Badenoch acknowledge they would have liked to have seen her do better in the latest round. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">But they think there is a clump of Tugendhat supporters who really didn&#8217;t like<!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/articles\/cp39q1ppk41o\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\"> Jenrick\u2019s claim last week<!-- --><\/a> that British special forces are \u201ckilling rather than capturing terrorists\u201d because of the European Convention on Human Rights. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">They particularly disliked his <!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BBCNewsnight\/status\/1841237145224429625\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">use in a campaign video<!-- --><\/a> of footage of a comrade of Tugendhat\u2019s from his military days, who later died.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cRob is in trouble,\u201d one MP predicts \u2013 or hopes.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">So things are: Uncertain, mighty competitive and close.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Tory MPs have to decide who they really do not want to be their leader and weigh up how party members might vote depending on the different potential pairings.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The website<!-- --><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/conservativehome.com\/2024\/10\/08\/tugendhat-out-cleverly-top-on-39-mps\/\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\"> ConservativeHome reckons<!-- --><\/a> that as things stand, James Cleverly could beat Robert Jenrick among the members, but Kemi Badenoch could beat James Cleverly.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">\u201cAccordingly, if MPs want to stop Cleverly from winning, backing Badenoch seems their best. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">&#8220;And if they want to stop Badenoch, a vote for Jenrick beckons,&#8221; as the ConservativeHome puts it.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It is enough to make your head spin.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Little wonder rumours are rife that all sorts of jiggery pokery has been going on &#8211;
