Sometimes, when the solar eruptions are aimed right at Earth, the particles may create brilliant auroras in night skies in many parts of the planet. Then there are other occasions when the battering can <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/02\/09\/science\/spacex-satellites-storm.html\" title=\"\">damage satellites<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/13\/us\/solar-storm-tractor-break-nebraska.html\" title=\"\">mangle GPS signals<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/11\/science\/northern-lights-aurora-solar-storm.html\" title=\"\">knock out power grids<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Wednesday, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/25\/science\/mike-bettwy-solar-flares-storms.html\" title=\"\">a federal center<\/a> issued a space weather severe storm watch after sun-watching spacecraft observed a large solar flare emanating from a sunspot in the sun\u2019s northern hemisphere, accompanied by an explosion of particles known as a coronal mass ejection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe concerning thing here is that it was right in the center of the sun,\u201d Shawn Dahl, the service coordinator for the Space Weather Prediction Center, which is part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, said during a news conference Wednesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If the eruption was right in the center of the sun, that meant at least part of it was probably aimed right at Earth. It looked big enough to cause potential disruptions. The barrage could also result in Northern and Southern Lights being visible on Thursday evening, reaching much closer to the Equator than usual.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This was the second such watch, which is the space weather equivalent of a hurricane watch, to be issued by the center in the past 19 years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The first, in May, put the United States <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/10\/science\/solar-storm-earth.html\" title=\"\">on alert for a severe solar storm<\/a> that appeared to be on its way to Earth.
