In the oxygen-rich atmosphere at that time, <em>Arthropleura<\/em> could grow to a massive <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/animals\/insects\/watch-ancient-giant-millipede-the-size-of-a-car-brought-back-to-life-in-remarkable-reconstruction\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/animals\/insects\/watch-ancient-giant-millipede-the-size-of-a-car-brought-back-to-life-in-remarkable-reconstruction\"><u>8.5 feet (2.6 meters) long and weigh over 100 pounds (45 kilograms)<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"hawk-nest\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\"\/>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Arthropleura<\/em> \u2026 has been known since the 18th century, over 100 years, and we hadn&#8217;t found a complete head,&#8221; study first author <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/umr5023.univ-lyon1.fr\/annuaire\/details\/1\/389-lheritier-mickael\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/umr5023.univ-lyon1.fr\/annuaire\/details\/1\/389-lheritier-mickael\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Micka\u00ebl Lheritier<\/u><\/a>, a paleontologist at Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University in France, told Live Science. &#8220;Now with the completed head, you can see the mandibles, the eyes, and these characteristics can [help us understand] the position of this [creature] in <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/474-controversy-evolution-works.html\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/474-controversy-evolution-works.html\"><u>evolution<\/u><\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The giant arthropod had perplexed paleontologists for decades. <em>Arthropleura<\/em>&#8216;s body had characteristics like a millipede. But without the head, scientists couldn&#8217;t understand the creature&#8217;s relationship to modern arthropods like millipedes and centipedes. While these two modern creatures may look similar, they actually diverged about 440 million years ago, way before <em>Arthropleura<\/em> came around. Paleontologists wondered if <em>Arthropleura<\/em> was a member of the millipede group or the centipede group.<\/p>\n<p><em>Arthropleura<\/em>&#8216;s family-tree controversy &#8220;features fierce debates about its affinities,&#8221; <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.geo.wvu.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/james-lamsdell\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.geo.wvu.edu\/faculty-and-staff\/james-lamsdell\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>James Lamsdell<\/u><\/a>, a paleontologist at West Virginia University who was not involved with the study, wrote in an <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.ads9192\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.ads9192\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>accompanying perspective<\/u><\/a> published in the same journal. But with the discovery of an intact head, &#8220;the mystery of <em>Anthropleura<\/em> now appears solved.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Related: <\/strong><a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/giant-arthropods-taichoute-morocco\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/giant-arthropods-taichoute-morocco\"><u><strong>7-foot-long arthropods commanded the sea 470 million years ago, &#8216;exquisite&#8217; fossils show<\/strong><\/u><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The CT scans virtually uncovered the fossilized head of two juvenile <em>Arthropleura<\/em> discovered within rock in the Montceau-les-Mines Lagerst\u00e4tte fossil site in France. The CT scans revealed unique stalked eyes jutting from the side of the head; gently curved antennae; and small, centipede-like mandibles. However, the stalked eyeballs have never been seen in the millipede or centipede families. <em>Arthropleura<\/em> has been widely considered terrestrial, but eyestalks are typically found in semiaquatic or fully aquatic animals, like <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/animals\/crustaceans\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.livescience.com\/animals\/crustaceans\"><u>crustaceans<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Because the head belongs to a juvenile, the explanation might lie in the animal&#8217;s life stage, Lamsdell suggested.
