The settlements account for 93% of all cases.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">GSK will also pay $70m to resolve a whistleblower complaint by a laboratory that alleged the drugmaker defrauded the US government by concealing Zantac&#8217;s cancer risks.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">GSK did not admit wrongdoing in any of the cases.<!-- --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div data-component=\"text-block\">\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/otp.tools.investis.com\/clients\/uk\/gsk\/rns\/regulatory-story.aspx?cid=410&amp;newsid=1873769\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">The company said in a statement to investors<!-- --><\/a> that the settlements &#8220;remove significant financial uncertainty, risk and distraction associated with protracted litigation.&#8221;<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Zantac was first approved for sale in the US in 1983.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Within five years it was the world&#8217;s best-selling drug, with annual sales topping $1bn.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">In 2020, US regulators pulled Zantac off shelves due to fears that a key ingredient, ranitidine, could turn into a substance that may cause cancer when exposed to heat. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">That move led to tens of thousands of lawsuits against the drug&#8217;s manufacturers.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">The previous year, <!-- --><a target=\"_self\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/health-49977829\" class=\"sc-c9299ecf-0 bZUiKB\" rel=\"noopener\">UK doctors were told to stop prescribing four types of Zantac<!-- --><\/a> as a &#8220;precautionary measure&#8221;.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">It followed concerns in several countries that the products may contain the impurity.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">As well as being sold by GSK, the drug has also been marketed by other major pharmaceutical firms Pfizer, Sanofi and Boehringer Ingelheim.<!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Pfizer and Sanofi have both agreed to settle cases. <!-- --><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-eb7bd5f6-0 fYAfXe\">Boehringer Ingelheim is the exception.
