Within minutes, videos posted to social media showed the flaps growing in size until large sections of the roof were completely missing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Earlier this week, Gov. Ron DeSantis of Florida <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/2024\/10\/08\/governor-ron-desantis-issues-updates-on-state-preparedness-efforts-for-hurricane-milton-3\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced Tropicana Field<\/a> was being converted into a 10,000-person base camp \u201cto support ongoing debris operations and post-landfall responders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tropicana Field\u2019s roof was built to withstand winds of up to 115 miles per hour, according to the Ray\u2019s media guide. Wind speeds in St. Petersburg at 10:30 p.m. were 101 m.p.h., <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/NWSTampaBay\/status\/1844226275801731583\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to forecasters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Bill Johnson first heard flapping noises as pieces of the roof started tearing off at about 10:45 p.m. Mr. Johnson, 57, was staying at a relative\u2019s house and saw the damage from the window.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The tears worsened and within 30 minutes whole panels started blowing off the roof, he said in a telephone interview early Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt just makes me sad seeing the stadium of the team I love ruined,\u201d said Mr. Johnson, a St. Petersburg resident and a lifelong Rays fan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RaysBaseball\/status\/1843043391229374515\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a social media post<\/a> on Sunday, the Rays said that \u201cTropicana Field is NOT being used as a shelter,\u201d and urged residents to remain updated about the storm through local officials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hurricane Milton made landfall near Sarasota on Wednesday. Large portions of Florida have seen significant flooding.
