Deaths from coronary artery disease have risen from 6.4 million in 2000 to 9.1 million in 2021, the WHO said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe000z3b6m2cpkrk1i@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The disease also takes a toll on the brain. The narrowing of arteries that occurs with coronary heart disease and high blood pressure can reduce blood flow and cause damage to the small blood vessels in the brain, resulting in cognitive impairment, the AHA said. High blood pressure and type 2 diabetes can also reduce blood flow to the brain and increase inflammation, leading to cognitive decline and dementia.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe00103b6mdjfdteqc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Having coronary heart disease raises the risk of future dementia by 27% compared with people without heart disease, the AHA statement said. The disease can start in a person\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacc.org\/doi\/10.1016\/j.jacc.2020.02.026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">40s and 50s<\/a>, often with no visible symptoms to alert a person of the danger.\n    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm22f5pm8001n3b6m6fuon5fo@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"heart-attacks-and-heart-failure\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        Heart attacks and heart failure<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe00113b6m3tguo768@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            About every 40 seconds, someone in the United States will have a heart attack, the AHA estimates. After that happens, up to 50% of those who survive experience loss of brain function, with some taking a sharper decline into cognitive impairment, the AHA statement said.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe00123b6ml0u0f5yq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Heart failure is a more severe form of heart disease, in which the heart is too weak to pump enough blood and oxygen to the body\u2019s organs. According to the new scientific statement, up to 81% of people with heart failure can have some form of cognitive decline that impacts their memory, language, or ability to think and plan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22fdoye00003b6mewkcm2pm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEmerging evidence suggests that the bidirectional relationship between the heart and the brain is deeper than we thought,\u201d Testai said in an email. \u201cVascular risk factors associated with cardiac diseases, such as diabetes, can increase the levels of beta-amyloid in the brain. which is recognized as a key marker of Alzheimer\u2019s disease.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22fe5jy00023b6mjsao2mmw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn return, beta-amyloid has been found in the heart and is associated with cardiac dysfunction,\u201d he said. \u201cThese findings suggest a fundamental\u00a0biochemical\u00a0connection between the heart and the brain.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<h3 class=\"subheader inline-placeholder\" data-editable=\"text\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/subheader\/instances\/cm22f5pm8001o3b6m0qzzo06o@published\" data-component-name=\"subheader\" id=\"a-fib-and-dementia\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n        A-fib and dementia<br \/>\n<\/h3>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe00133b6m4bwomo97@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Known as A-fib, atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat often described by many people who have it as a \u201cquiver,\u201d \u201cflutter\u201d or \u201cflip-flop\u201d of the heart in the chest.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe00143b6mtdramgyp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Atrial fibrillation is the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6515763\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">leading cause of stroke<\/a>\u00a0in the US. In addition, strokes connected to A-fib tend to be \u201cmore severe than strokes with other underlying causes,\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/heart-disease\/about\/atrial-fibrillation.html#:~:text=Strokes%20caused%20by%20complications%20from,in%20the%20blood%20vessel%20lining.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe00153b6mvdc3npvw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Small brain bleeds, called microhemorrhages, that can lead to cognitive decline are more common in people with atrial fibrillation, according to the new scientific statement. In fact, people with A-fib have a 39% increased risk of memory or thinking problems.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe00163b6m1gqk9yhz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rate of atrial fibrillation in the US is growing \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIRCRESAHA.120.316340#:~:text=Challenges%20in%20atrial%20fibrillation%20(AF)%20epidemiology.&amp;text=In%20the%20United%20States%20alone,to%2016%20million%20by%202050.&amp;text=In%20Europe%2C%20prevalent%20AF%20in,reach%2014%20million%20by%202060.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">estimates<\/a> suggest up to 16 million people will have A-fib by 2050.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe00173b6ml3haw12w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Modern medicine has amazing drugs \u2014 such as statins and cholesterol-lowering medications \u2014 that can prevent or slow heart disease, especially if caught early, Freeman said. Regular checkups and taking prescribed medications on a daily basis are critical to making that happen, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe00183b6mwingb428@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            However, there is a limit on what drugs can accomplish. Other ways include getting plenty of sleep, eating healthy foods, and limiting your time following the news or engaging in social media, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/questions-and-answers\/item\/stress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Health Organization<\/a>. It also helps to stay connected with others and to employ calming practices such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2021\/07\/07\/health\/breathing-stress-relief-calm-wellness\/index.html\">meditation and deep breathing<\/a>. One of the most successful tools, though, is physical activity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe001i3b6mnu6t6itr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If there is only lifestyle change you can make, focus on exercise, Freeman said. Adults should do 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week, along with strength training, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/physical-activity-basics\/adding-adults\/what-counts.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to the CDC.<\/a> You know you\u2019re doing moderate exercise when you are breathing hard and unable to sing a song, but can still talk. Vigorous activities such as jogging, swimming laps or playing basketball will make it hard to speak at all.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe001j3b6muc4j8xmu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The increase in activity benefits the whole body, including the brain, studies have shown. A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/06\/health\/step-dementia-risk-wellness\/index.html\">September 2022 study<\/a> found people who walked at a very brisk pace of 112 steps per minute for 30 minutes a day lowered their risk of dementia by 62%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe001k3b6m0azjejhx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Don\u2019t have a step counter? You can count the number of steps you take in 10 seconds and then multiply it by six \u2014 or the number of steps you take in six seconds and multiply it by 10. Either way works.<strong\/>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cm22f5oxe001l3b6m2mggt6tw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cPhysical activity is just absolutely magnificent,\u201d Freeman told CNN. \u201cAnd when if you blend that with eating a more plant-based diet, de-stressing, sleeping enough and connecting with others \u2014 that\u2019s your magic recipe.
