In the surreal novel, a depressed housewife shocks her family when she stops eating meat; later, she starves herself, thinking that she can feed off sunlight.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Porochista Khakpour, in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/02\/07\/books\/review\/the-vegetarian-by-han-kang.html\" title=\"\">review of \u201cThe Vegetarian\u201d for The New York Times<\/a>, said that Han \u201chas been rightfully celebrated as a visionary in South Korea.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Han\u2019s other novels include \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/25\/books\/review\/han-kang-white-book.html\" title=\"\">The White Book<\/a>,\u201d which was also nominated for the International Booker Prize, and \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/18\/books\/review\/greek-lessons-han-kang.html\" title=\"\">Greek Lessons<\/a>,\u201d published in English in 2023. In \u201cGreek Lessons,\u201d a woman loses her ability to speak and tries to restore it by learning ancient Greek. Idra Novey, in a review for The Times, called the novel \u201ca celebration of the ineffable trust to be found in sharing language.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Anders Olsson, the chair of the Nobel committee, said in a statement on Thursday that Han, in her writing, \u201chas a unique awareness of the connections between body and soul, the living and the dead, and in her poetic and experimental style has become an innovator in contemporary prose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Han\u2019s award was a surprise. Before the announcement, the bookmakers\u2019 favorite for this year\u2019s award was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1991\/12\/29\/books\/a-nightmare-circling-overhead.html\" title=\"\">Can Xue<\/a>, an avant-garde Chinese writer of category-defying novels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Nobel Prize is literature\u2019s pre-eminent award, and winning it is a capstone to a writer, poet or playwright\u2019s career. Past recipients have included <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/08\/06\/books\/toni-morrison-dead.html\" title=\"\">Toni Morrison<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/26\/theater\/26pinter.html\" title=\"\">Harold Pinter<\/a> and, in 2016, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/10\/14\/arts\/music\/bob-dylan-nobel-prize-literature.html#:~:text=Dylan%20was%20an%20appropriate%20choice,win%20the%20prize%20since%20Ms.\" title=\"\">Bob Dylan<\/a>.
